Women's Soccer Visits NJIT on Friday; Host Navy on Sunday

Mount Update...Mount St. Mary's saw its two-game win streak snapped by Bucknell, 1-0, in overtime last Friday in the first-ever women's soccer home night game. Bucknell's Molly Linhart lofted a perfect shot from 25 yards out to beat Mount keeper Alicia Miller for the game-winning goal. The Mount was outshot, 14-9, in the game while Miller made five saves in the contest. Regina Potter, Sadie Winship and Kim Karpinski paced the Mount offense with two shots each. Winship had a great scoring chance in the overtime period, but was denied by the Bucknell goalkeeper.

About the Highlanders...NJIT defeated Rider, 2-0, this past Sunday to move to 2-3-0 on the season. Chacha Naito scored her first collegiate goal in the victory. Gaolkeeper Saide Mele posted the shutout victory. NJIT has scored four goals in five games this season while Mele has a 1.16 GAA and 17 saves on the year.

The All-Time Series with NJIT...The Mount won the first-ever meeting between the schools last year, 5-2, at Waldron Family Stadium.

Last Year's Meeting...Sadie Winship scored twice while Kim Karpinski added a goal and two assists to lead the Mount to a 5-2 win over NJIT last year at Waldron Family Stadium. With the score tied at 2-2 early in the second half, the Mount scored the final three goals of the game to earn the victory. Karpinski had the game-winning goal when she scored off a scramble in front of the NJIT goal.

About the Midshipmen...Navy has opened the 2009 season with a 6-1-1 record. The Mids will host VMI on Friday night before heading to the Mount on Sunday. Carissa Youker is the team's top scorer with five goals and three assists for 13 points. She scored the only goal in Navy's 1-0 win over Liberty this past Sunday. Christine Calderon and Brittany White each have three goals and two assists on the year. Beth Reed is the starting goalkeeper and has a 0.63 GAA with 38 saves and four shutouts in eight games.

The All-Time Series with Navy...Navy has won all nine meetings between the schools, including a 5-1 victory in Annapolis last year. The Mount is 0-2 all-time at home against Navy with the last meeting a 3-0 loss on September 13, 2005.

Last Year's Meeting...Navy scored four goals in the second half to break open a close game and earn a 5-1 victory over the Mount in Annapolis last September. Mount goalkeeper Alicia Miller made 12 saves in the game as Navy held a 25-12 advantage in shots. Brittany White led Navy with two goals while Christine Calderone and Jen Grijalva each had a pair of assists. Beth Reed made two saves in the second half for the Mids.

Close Calls...The Mount is 0-3 at home this year with each loss coming by the score of 1-0. The Mount opened the season with a 1-0 home loss to Loyola on Aug. 23. A week later, the Mountaineers fell to George Washington, 1-0, before dropping last Friday's 1-0 overtime game to Bucknell.

Historic Night...The Mount played the first-ever home night game in the history of the women's soccer program last Friday against Bucknell. The Mount lost, 1-0, in overtime before a crowd of 232.

Miller Named NEC Defensive Player of the Week...Sophomore goalkeeper Alicia Miller was named Northeast Conference Defensive Player of the Week on September 7 after averaging 10.0 saves per game in the Mount's wins over Saint Joseph's and Drexel. Miller made eight saves while allowing just one goal in the 2-1 win at Saint Joseph's last Friday. On Sunday, Miller made 12 saves in the Mount's 3-2 win over Drexel, including a game-saving stop on a Drexel breakaway in the final minute of the game.

Breaking a Couple of Long Streaks...The Mount's two-game sweep of its weekend trip to Philadelphia broke a couple of long streaks for the women's soccer program. The Mount has not won consecutive games since besting St. Peter's and Howard in back-to-back games during the 2005 season. The back-to-back road wins were the first by a Mount team in 13 seasons dating back to win s over Saint Francis (Pa.) and Marist during the 1996 season.

Menotti Moves Up on Scoring List...Senior Emily Menotti posted her first goal of the season in the Mount's 3-2 win at Drexel on Sunday. Menotti, who led the Mount in scoring last season with three goals and three assists, now has 10 career goals and 27 career points at the Mount. The 10 goals are tied for eighth on the Mount's all-time list while the 27 career points are ninth all-time at the school.

Miller Leads League in Saves...Sophomore goalkeeper Alicia Miller has made 49 saves over the first six games this season. She leads the Northeast Conference in both total saves and saves per game (8.17). Miller has a 1.98 GAA and a .803 save percentage for the Mountaineers this season. For her career, Miller has made 177 saves in 23 appearances for the Mountaineers, averaging 7.70 saves per game for her career.
