Emmitsburg, Md. (September 1, 2018) - Ten different Mountaineers scored a try as the Mount St. Mary's Women's Rugby Team blanked Sacred Heart 76-0 on Saturday afternoon. This is the first win for the Mount in the Fall 15's Season since becoming a division one program last year. Freshman Ubaida Ahmed sparked the Mount offense in the first half with two tries scored. Graduate student Julie Crochet added two tries of her own in the second half that kept the Mountaineers in control of the match. Jordan Butcher, Lauren Judkins, Ubaida Ahmed, Jenna Lewaren, Hannah Orland, Nataly Cisneros, Molly Jackson, Julie Crochet, Samantha Mathis, and Maya Grassi all touched the ball down across the touch line for Mount St. Mary's in the win.
Captains Jordan Butcher and Lauren Judkins put the Mount on the board first with two tries within the first ten minutes of the match that gave the Mountaineers a 10-0 early lead. Butcher powered the ball over the touch line for the first score of the match after an early Pioneer penalty and Two minutes later Judkins capitalized after a long run from Ubaida Ahmed. Ahmed scored the next try after a long run down the right side of the pitch to put the Mountaineers ahead 17-0 after the conversion kick from freshman Maya Grassi was good.
Midway through the first half, freshman Jenna Lewaren dragged defenders with her across the touch line after the Sacred Heart defense stopped Mount St. Mary's attack twice at the touch line. Sophomore Hannah Orland added her first try of the year later in the half and Ahmed scored her second try of the half right before time expired that gave the Mount a commanding 36-0 advantage at halftime.
The Mountaineers added 40 more points off of six tries and five conversion kicks in the second half. Four minutes into the half, graduate student Nataly Cisneros ran up the middle of the pitch for the first score of the second half. Freshmen Molly Jackson and Samantha Mathis each touched the ball across the touch line midway through the second half. Julie Crochet slid through the Pioneer defense to score her first try of the match and scored her second try of the match late in the half after she picked the ball up and ran down the right side of the pitch. The Mountaineers kept possession of the ball for the majority of the match and was able to shut out the Sacred Heart offense to preserve the 76-0 victory.
The Mount's next home match is on Saturday, September 15 at 12 PM against Molloy College.
