Women's Set To Host Mount St. Mary's Spring Invitational On Monday And Tuesday

opening tee... The Mount women's golf team will hosts the Mount St. Mary's Spring Invitational on Monday and Tuesday for the first time since the 2010 season. After a one-year hiatus, the Mount's annual spring event returns to the Quail Valley Golf Course with Central Connecticut State, Fairfield, Robert Morris, St. Francis (N.Y.) and Wagner set to join the Mount in the field. For the first time, the event will be 52 holes with competitors playing a continuous 36-holes on Monday starting at 7:30 a.m. and a final round on Tuesday starting at 8 a.m.
last time at that event… Autumn Serruta finished fourth to lead the Mount St. Mary's women's golf team to a second-place standing at the Mount St. Mary's Spring Invitational on Apr. 13, 2010. Serruta posted an 83 on the first day and then registered an 81 in the final round to finish in fourth place with a two-round score of 164, five strokes behind the medalist. Her second round score of 81 was the third-best score in the rainy conditions. Megan Corbett also finished in the Top-10 with a score of 171 while Christina Koerper, Christina Hall and Sarah Roe each finished with a two-round total of 181 to finish in 12th place. Abbey Fry (16th place, 185) and Nicole Fazio (18th place, 194) competed as individuals in the event.
last time on that green… Sarah Roe won the Gettysburg Invitational to lead the Mount St. Mary's women's golf squad to the team championship at the event on Sept. 20, 2010. The 18-hole competition was played on the Mount's home course at the Quail Valley Golf Course. Roe posted the second-best single round in program history with a 76 to win the event by one stroke. The Mountaineers won the event by 20 strokes after posting a 328 on the afternoon, the third-best single round in program history. Wall finished two strokes behind Roe to finish in third place with a score of 78, the sixth-best single-round mark in program history. Autumn Serruta also finished in the Top-10, placing seventh with a total of 84. Abbey Fry (11th place, 90) and Nicole Fazio (14th place, 92) rounded out the Mount St. Mary's team competitors. Freshman Rebecca Lynch made her collegiate debut as an individual in the event and finished 10th with a round of 89.
last time out… Kelsey Hayward finished 50th to lead the Mount St. Mary's women's golf team to a 13th-place standing at the Spider Intercollegiate on Mar. 27. Hayward posted rounds of 83, 78 and 87 in the two day to finish with a score of 248 and in 50th place, 30 strokes behind the medalist. Sarah Roe (52nd place, 249), Abbey Fry (64th place, 257), Christina Hall (74th place, 268) and Rebecca Lynch (81st place, 290) rounded out the Mount's team competitors. Nicole Fazio (78th place, 268) participated in the event as an individual.
next on the green... The Mount will conclude its season at the Northeast Conference Championships on Apr. 27-29.
golf fix… The Mount women's golf team was featured on Feb. 27 edition of the Golf Fix on the Golf Channel.
the schedule… The Mount will participate in five events before the Northeast Conference Championships on Apr. 27-29. The Mount opens the spring with its first trip to the Gary Freeman B-CU Spring Invitational on Feb. 28-29. The Mount remains in the south for a return trip to the Lonnie Barton Invitational on Mar. 5-6. The squad also returns to the C&F Bank Invitational (Mar. 18-19) before participating in the Spring Golf Intercollegiate (Mar. 25-26) for the first time. Mount St. Mary's will host the Mount St. Mary's Spring Invitational on Apr. 16-17 before heading to the NEC Championships.
double your pleasure… Senior Sarah Roe won the Gettysburg Invitational for the second-straight season on Sept. 19. The senior took the honor last season by carding a round of 76 at Quail Valley. This year at the event, Roe posted a 79 to earn the medalist honors for the second time.
making their marks… Seniors Christina Hall and Sarah Roe have etched their names into the Mount record book. Sarah Roe holds the second and fourth-best single-round in program history. The senior fired a 75 in the first round of the Holiday Inn Pittsburgh Airport Colonial Classic on Oct. 10 after shooting a 76 at the Gettysburg Invitational last year to win the event. Roe also shot a 78 in her career to rank ninth on the chart. Hall has posted five marks on the single-round Top-10 including a 76 at the Mount St. Mary's Fall Classic in 2008. Hall also has three of the squad's Top-10 for two round scores and has the top mark for career average at the Mount (86.7) while Roe is in third place (87.2).
moving on up… As a team, the Mount women's golf team continued to make improvements in the last four years. During that stretch, the squad has posted all 10 of its Top-10 single rounds and nine of the 10 for two-round standards in program history. Last year, the squad averaged a program record 341.1 strokes per round.
new to the mountain... Joining first-year head coach Kevin Farrell in 2011-12 are freshmen Sara Fuss, Kelsey Hayward and Jen Kim for their first year in Emmitsburg. Hayward and Kim will be making their collegiate debut at the Towson Invitational.
about the coach... Kevin Farrell begins his first season as the women's golf head coach in 2011-12 and will enter his third season at the helm of the men's golf team. Farrell was a standout golfer on the Mountaineers men's golf team from 2004-08. He finished in the Top-10 at the NEC Championships in both his junior and senior seasons to earn spots on the All-NEC team. Farrell is one of five players in team history to earn finish in the Top-10 at the NEC Championships twice in his career and his three-round score of 220 at the 2008 NEC Championships is still the record for three rounds at the NEC Championships.
