Emmitsburg, Md. (August 18, 2017) – Mount St. Mary's University women's basketball first-year Head Coach Maria Marchesano announced the hiring of Julie Kaufman as an assistant coach on Friday. Kaufman will serve as the Mount's recruiting coordinator and also play a large role in player development with the post players.
"Julie brings a great amount experience to our staff and we are thrilled she is joining our family," said Marchesano. "Her local ties and passion for recruiting will be a huge asset to our program. Throughout the interview process, we were not only impressed with her ability to teach and develop players, but also about her excitement and love of Mount St. Mary's as a whole. Her vision and enthusiasm for the program are contagious and we are thankful to have her on board."
Kaufman joins the Mount coaching staff after spending the 2016-17 season as an assistant coach at Niagara University. Prior to her time with the Purple Eagles, Kaufman worked for three seasons as an assistant coach at Seton Hill University in Greensburg, Pa., where she primarily worked to help develop the team's post players. During the 2015-16 campaign, Kaufman helped guide the Griffins to national rankings in defensive rebounds per game (26th) and three-point field goal defense (64th).
From 2011-13, Kaufman served as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator at Shepherd University in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. In her final season at Shepherd, the team was ranked 14th in the nation in scoring offense and 17th in field goal percentage.
Kaufman began her collegiate coaching career at local Hood College, serving as a graduate assistant from 2008-11. Prior to her time at Hood, she served as the assistant varsity coach and assistant track and field coach at Southern Guilford High School from 2006-08, and at Damascus High from 2005-06.
Kaufman played her collegiate basketball at Catawba College, where she helped lead her squad to a pair of conference championships and two NCAA Division II regional appearances.
Kaufman earned her bachelor's degree in physical education from Catawba College in 2005, and completed her master's in curriculum and instruction at Hood College in 2011.
Kaufman's younger sister, Jessie, was a standout with the Mount from 2010-14, and ranks sixth all-time in program history in three-pointers made (158), ninth in blocked shots (67) and 33rd in career points (837).
