Emmitsburg, Md. (May 22, 2013) – The Mount St. Mary's women's basketball team was one of 16 teams selected for the field of the Preseason Women's National Invitational Tournament (WNIT) announced on Wednesday.
Joining the Mount in this year's field will be Georgia State, Gonzaga, Idaho, IPFW, Louisville, Loyola Chicago, LSU, North Carolina A&T, Oklahoma, Quinnipiac, Saint Joseph's, Stephen F. Austin, Stetson, Tennessee-Martin and Wichita State.
Of the teams selected to play, 10 of them qualified for last year's NCAA Tournament. Seven of the teams made it to the round of 64, while LSU and Oklahoma made runs to the Sweet 16 and Louisville finished as the national runner-up.
In the Preseason WNIT, which began in 1994, each team in the field is guaranteed at least three games. Teams are eligible to play in the tournament once during a four-year span, and only one school per conference can be chosen to compete. The program's expected success for the season, relevant past, conference standings, fan base, geographic location and other criteria are taken into consideration during the selection process.
First round games are schedule for Nov. 8, followed by the second round on Nov. 10-11. The tournament's semifinals are set for Nov. 14 with the championship game, which will be televised live on CBS Sports Network, scheduled for Nov. 17 at 4:00 p.m. Consolation games will take place Nov. 15-16.
The Mount will be making its second appearance in the event and the first since 2000 when the Mountaineers traveled to Charlottesville, Va. to take on the University of Virginia in the opening round.
Last year's Preseason WNIT champion, North Carolina, advanced to the round of 32 in the NCAA Tournament in March.
The full bracket with first round matchups and locations will be revealed in June.
