Emmitsburg, Md. (February 23, 2013)--Mount St. Mary's edged St. Francis Brooklyn, 49-48, in women's basketball action at Knott Arena on Saturday night. Jacqueline Brewer hit five three-pointers to lead the Mount with 15 points in the win.
Trailing 44-43 with 5:53 remaining, the Mount scored the next six points to take its biggest lead of the game, 49-44, with 2:26 left. Rachel Matthews scored back-to-back baskets on nice low-post moves to give the Mount a three-point lead, and senior Tara Lonergan closed the run with a pair of free throws.
St. Francis Brooklyn responded with a pair of Jessica Kaufman lay-ups to cut the Mount lead to 49-48 with 1:10 left. The Mount's Sydney Henderson missed a jumper with 36 seconds left, but Lonergan came tied up Jaymee Veney on the rebound to give the Mount (12-14, 8-7 NEC) possession.
St. Francis (11-15, 8-7 NEC) forced a turnover on the inbounds play, but Kaufman missed a shot with 14 seconds left. The Mount's Lonergan missed a lay-up with eight seconds left, and St. Francis (N.Y.) grabbed the rebound, but their desperation shot from halfcourt at the buzzer was off the mark.
Brewer was 5-for-8 from three-point range for her team-high 15 points. Lonergan added 12 points and a pair of blocks while Sydney Henderson chipped in nine pionts, six rebounds and four steals for the Mountaineers.
Jaymee Veney led St. Francis Brooklyn with 16 points and six boards while Kaufman finished with 13 points and seven rebounds in the loss.
The Mount hosts LIU Brooklyn on Monday night at 7 p.m.
