STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - The Mount St. Mary's women's basketball team defeated Wagner, 54-42 in Northeast Conference action on Tuesday evening. The Mount got major contributions from Jenn Carney, Sydney Henderson, and Kayla Grossett. The Mount now moves to 10-13 overall and 6-6 in Northeast Conference play.
Mount St. Mary's started the game on a 9-0 run, which featured scoring by four different Mountaineers. Jenn Carney (Drexel Hills, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) lead the way with five of the nine points. The Mount jumped out to a 16-6 lead with 11:06 on the clock, after the second media timeout.
Wagner answered back with a 9-4 run of their own to cut the deficit to 20-13 at the third media timeout of the half. But the Mount came back 9-0 run to end the second half with a 31-19 advantage. Kayla Grossett (Toronto, Ontario/David and Mary Thompson C.I.) lead the Mount in the first half with 10 points along with three rebounds. Carney added another seven points in the half. The Mount shot 52.2% from the field. They used 12 points off turnovers to aid the lead.
Wagner came out to start the second half on an 8-3 run fueled by a couple of three's from Archambault and Amorosa. Sydney Henderson (Richmond, Va./Atlee) quickly answered with a 5-0 run of her own to increase the lead back to nine points. Archambault cut the lead to within six midway through the second half by hitting a couple of three pointers.
The Mount answered right back, with Henderson hitting a couple of big three's and a mid-range jumper to put the Mount ahead 47-38 at the final media timeout of the game. The game was back and forth for most of the second half, however the Mount would put it away with a big 7-2 run to finish the game. The Mountaineers hit all five of their foul shots at the end of the game to seal the victory.
The Mount shot 8-9 from the charity stripe in the game. Carney scored a career high 10 points in the contest on 3-8 shooting. Junior Sydney Henderson scored in double figures again with 17 points. Grossett also had a big game, scoring 12 points while pulling down seven boards. Senior Selina Mann (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield) stuffed the stat line; scoring five points, grabbing seven rebounds along with four assists and four steals.
The Mount returns to action against Central Connecticut State on Saturday, February 16. Game time is 2:00 p.m.
