Women's Basketball Falls At Saint Francis, 83-59
LORETTO, Pa. - Saint Francis defeated Mount St. Mary's 83-59 in Northeast Conference (NEC) women's basketball action on Saturday.
Rachel Mathews (Richmond, Va./Midlothian) narrowly missed her first career double-double, finishing with a career-high 14 points along with nine rebounds and three blocks. Jacqueline Brewer (Martinsburg, W. Va./Martinsburg) paced the Mount (9-13, 5-6 NEC) with 16 points while Sydney Henderson (Richmond, Va./Atlee) chipped in 12 points and seven rebounds in the loss.
Alli Williams fueled the Red Flash (13-9, 8-3 NEC) with 21 points and 10 rebounds and Nikki Gibbs added 11 points in the winning effort.
Saint Francis jumped out to the advantage and never looked back to earn the victory against Mount St. Mary's in the only meeting between the two teams this season.
With the Red Flash holding an 11-7 lead, the Mount scored the next five points to take its only lead of the day at 12-11 after a 3-ball by Brewer and a layup by Mathews with 15:15 left in the first half.
Saint Francis then scored the next 12 points to take a 23-11 advantage. Gibbs powered the run with seven of the 12 points. After the Mountaineers trimmed the margin to 26-16, the Red Flash went on another run to grab a 30-18 lead with 5:46 left thanks to a 13-2 spurt.
Trailing 39-18, the Mount went on a 9-3 run thanks to traditional 3-point plays by Henderson and Mathews and a trey by Brewer to cut the deficit to 42-27, but Fleming went on a 6-2 run to close the half to give Saint Francis a 48-29 lead going into the locker room.
The Red Flash outscored the Mountaineers 35-30 in the second half to go on for an 83-59 victory,
Tara Lonergan (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) added eight points for the Mount in the loss.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Tuesday at Wagner. Game time is 7 p.m.
