Quinnipiac Downs Women's Basketball, 78-55

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Quinnipiac defeated Mount St. Mary's 78-55 in Northeast Conference (NEC) women's basketball action on Monday.

Sydney Henderson (Richmond, Va./Atlee) and Tara Lonergan (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) paced the Mount (9-12, 5-5 NEC) with 10 points apiece while Henderson added six rebounds and Lonergan had five caroms in the loss.

Gillian Abshire fueled the Bobcats (19-2, 10-0 NEC) with 17 points while Brittany McQuain tallied 14 points and 13 rebounds. Jasmine Martin scored 16 points and Camryn Warner chipped in 10 points in the winning effort.

Quinnipiac took the lead 13 minutes into the game and never looked back to earn its fifth-straight win against Mount St. Mary's and remain undefeated in league play.

The Bobcats jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, but the Mountaineers went on a 14-5 run to take a 14-11 edge midway through the first half.  

The Mount surge was led by the post play of Lonergan, Kayla Grossett (Toronto, Ontario/David and Mary Thompson C.I.) and Rachel Mathews (Richmond, Va./Midlothian) in the run. Mathews and Grossett each had four points in the spurt with Lonergan adding a basket. Jenn Carney (Drexel Hills, Pa./Archbishop Carroll) gave the Mount a three-point lead on jumper with 10:42 left in the opening stanza.

Quinnipiac then scored the next seven points to take the lead for good. Abshire gave the Bobcats the lead it would not relinquish with a layup at 7:31 and Quinnipiac went into the locker room with a 27-21 advantage.

The Bobcats extended the lead to eight points on a layup on the first possession in the second half. The Mount could get no closer the rest of the way and Quinnipiac went on for a 78-55 victory.

Mathews narrowly missed her third-straight double-figure Monday performance with eight points and six rebounds. Grossett recorded nine points and seven rebounds.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Saturday at Saint Francis. Game time is 4 p.m.
