Lehigh Downs Women's Basketball In Non-Conference Finale, 66-57

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Lehigh closed the game on a 18-6 run to come away with a 66-57 victory against Mount St. Mary's in non-conference women's basketball action on Wednesday.

Jessie Kaufman (Damascus, Md./Damascus) paced the Mount (4-7) with 17 points and five rebounds. Jacqueline Brewer (Martinsburg, W. Va./Martinsburg)  added 13 points while Sydney Henderson (Richmond, Va./Atlee) stuffed the stat sheet with seven points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists in the loss.

Hilary Weaver fueled the Mountain Hawks (6-7) with 19 points. Kerry Kinek tallied 12 points and nine rebounds while Becky Guman recorded 11 points and eight boards and Katie O'Reilly had 10 points in the winning effort.

Lehigh held the lead for the majority of the game only to see Mount St. Mary's grab the lead briefly in the second half before the Mountain Hawks closed the game by scoring 18 of the final 24 points to earn the victory.

Kaufman gave the Mount a 51-48 lead for the only time in the second half on a 3-pointer with 8:07 left in the game.

Lehigh then scored the six points to take the lead for good. Kinek nailed a jumper with 7:48 left before the freshmen scored in the paint at 7:17 to give the Mountain Hawks the advantage for good. O'Reilly then converted two free throws at 6:34 for a three-point edge. Kaufman hit a jumper at 5:12 to trim the margin to 54-53, but Kinek scored in the lane 58 seconds later and the Mount could get no closer the rest of the way.

The Mountain Hawks scored 11 of the first 18 points in the first six minutes of the game thanks to five points by Weaver and four from O'Reilly.

Mount St. Mary's tied the game at 11 and 13 before taking a 15-13 lead on a Tara Lonergan (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) layup with 7:48 left in the first half.

Lehigh closed the first half on a 13-7 spurt to take a 26-22 lead going into the locker room after getting points from six different players.

The Mountain Hawks increased the lead to nine points with 15:31 left in the game.  Mount St. Mary's then used a 15-6 run to tie the game at 46 with 9:29 on the clock. Kaufman had five points and Brewer added four points in the spurt.

O'Reilly gave Lehigh a 48-46 lead on a layup with 9:09 remaining before Kaufman scored in the lane at 8:31 to tie the game at 48 and then gave the Mountaineers a 51-48 lead on a trey with 8:07 on the clock. The Mountain Hawks scored 18 of the final 24 points to come away with the victory.

Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Saturday in its Northeast Conference opener against Monmouth at Knott Arena. Game time is 3 p.m.
