Henderson Nabs Second NEC/Choice Hotels Player Of The Week Honor This Season

EMMITSBURG, Md. – Sydney Henderson (Richmond, Va./Atlee), a member of the Mount St. Mary's women's basketball team, has been named the Northeast Conference(NEC)/Choice Hotels Player of the Week for the week of Dec. 10-16. It is the redshirt junior's second weekly conference honor of her career.

Henderson, a 5-6 redshirt junior guard, was instrumental in the Mount's 74-64 victory against Seton Hall after tallying 27 points and 10 rebounds against the Big East program on Sunday. The redshirt junior went 8-for-11 from the floor, 6 of 7 from behind the arc and 5 of 7 from the free throw line in the victory. It marked the second occasion this season and third time in her career that she has connected on six treys in a game, the eighth most in single-game program history. In the final two minutes, Henderson went 4-for-4 from the free throw line and corralled two defensive rebounds to help seal the victory. The redshirt junior had four points in the squad's decisive 13-0 in the second half including a 3-pointer at 7:58 to give the Mountaineers a 10-point lead.

The win against the Pirates was the Mountaineers first against a Big East program since joining Division I in 1988-89. The Mount has five wins against Georgetown and a win against Notre Dame, but those victories were when Mount St. Mary's was a Division II program.

Henderson ranks second in the NEC in 3-pointers made (2.38), sixth in defensive rebounds (5.50), seventh in in scoring (16.4 ppg.), seventh in free throw percentage (.788), eighth in rebounding (7.3 rpg.) and eighth in 3-point field goal percentage (.396).

The redshirt junior has played some of her best games in the Garden State. She is averaging 18.8 points and 5.7 rebounds in six career games played in New Jersey and 17.1 points and 7.2 rebounds per game in nine games against teams from the state.

It marks the 20th time a Mount player has been named the NEC Player of the Week dating back to the 1997-98. Henderson becomes the first player since Kia Williams in 2000-01 to earn the weekly honor twice in the same season. Henderson also won the award for the week of Nov. 12-18 after scoring a career-high 30 points against Rider on Nov. 16.

Mount St. Mary's, who has won three straight, looks to go 2-0 against the Big East when it travels to Pittsburgh on Thursday. Game time is 7 p.m.
