Mann-Henderson Tandem Powers Women's Basketball Past UMES, 62-58
EMMITSBURG, MD. – Selina Mann (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield) and Sydney Henderson (Richmond, Va./Atlee) combined for 33 points and 21 rebounds to lift Mount St. Mary's past Maryland-Eastern Shore 62-58 in non-conference women's basketball action on Wednesday.
Mann finished the game with 20 points, nine rebounds, five assists and three steals while Henderson tallied 13 points and 12 rebounds. After Jacqueline Brewer (Martinsburg, W. Va./Martinsburg) gave the Mount (2-4) the lead for good on two free throws with 38 seconds left, Henderson came down with a defensive rebound and Mann converted two charity tosses to seal the victory.
Mann posted her second 20-point performance of her career and the first since scoring a career-high 26 points at San Jose State on Dec. 29, 2009. Mann went 4-for-7 from the floor, 2 of 2 from behind the arc and 10 of 11 from the charity stripe on the night. The senior nearly missed her fifth career double-double after finishing the game with nine caroms. Henderson notched her second career double-double after tying her career best with 12 rebounds while also scoring 13 points.
Brewer made the most of her first start in a Mount uniform, tallying eight points, five rebounds, five assists and three steals. Jessie Kaufman (Damascus, Md./Damascus) added 10 points while Kayla Grossett (Toronto, Ontario/David and Mary Thompson C.I.) chipped in nine points in the winning effort.
Karona Roach paced the Lady Hawks (1-4) with 20 points. Ashleigh Claybrooks tallied 11 points and nine rebounds and Sha-Kiyla Finney registered 11 points in the loss.
Mount St. Mary's held a 10 point lead with 8:34 left and a nine-point advantage with 5:49 on the clock only to see UMES come back to tie the game in the closing minute. The Mount scored the final four points of the day to come away with its 11th victory against the Lady Hawks.
Powered by 10 points from Roach, UMES went on a 16-4 run to erase a 10-point deficit and even the score at 58 after Roach drained a 3-pointer in the corner with 54 seconds left. Brewer then converted a pair at the line with 38 seconds left to give the Mountaineers the lead for good at 60-58. Roach missed a jumper with 19 ticks left and Henderson corralled the rebound. Mann then sealed the win with two free throws to secure the win and finish with her second career 20-point performance.
Mount St. Mary's jumped out to a 20-12 lead with 10:22 remaining in the first half thanks to seven points from Kaufman. The Lady Hawks then closed the half on a 19-11 run to go into the locker room tied at 31. Finney recorded seven points in the run and Roach added six points.
The Mount opened the second half on an 18-8 run to take a 49-39 advantage with 11:39 remaining. Grossett was the catalyst on the run with six points. UMES then made a furious comeback to tie the game in the final minute, but Brewer and Mann went 4-for-4 at the foul line to clinch the Mountaineers second win of the season.
Mann moved into fifth place on the program's all-time career steal list with 271 and jumped into eighth place for career assists with 340 helpers.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action at home against Navy on Saturday. Game time is 2 p.m.
