Women's Basketball Falls 77-52 At Howard
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Howard defeated Mount St. Mary's 77-52 in non-conference women's basketball action on Sunday.
Saadia Doyle fueled the Bison (2-4) with 26 points and eight rebounds. Kara Smith registered 20 points while Cheyenne Curley-Payne tallied 11 points and 10 assists and Jerrelle Gorham chipped in 10 points in the winning effort.
Howard used a strong run in the first half and never looked back to earn its second-straight win against Mount St. Mary's in the series.
With the Mount clinging to a 9-8 lead with 15:59 remaining, Howard rolled off 17 unanswered points to grab a 26-9 advantage. Smith started the surge with eight-straight points before Doyle and Curley-Payne combined for the next nine points to take a 17-point lead with 8:52 remaining.
Mount St. Mary's used a 14-5 run to trim the deficit to 32-26 with 2:14 left in the stanza. Henderson powered the run with eight points. Howard then scored the final four points in the last minute of the stanza to go into the locker room with a 37-26 lead.
The Bison outscored the Mountaineers 40-26 in the second half to come away with the victory.
Sophomore Melanie Mocniak (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) notched her first collegiate point on a free throw with 10:03 remaining in the second half.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Wednesday at Bucknell. Game time is 7 p.m.
