Henderson's Career Night Powers Women's Basketball Past Rider, 70-67
LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. – Sydney Henderson (Richmond, Va./Atlee) scored the go-ahead basket with 42 seconds left and finished with a career-high 30 points to lead Mount St. Mary's past Rider 70-67 in non-conference women's basketball action on Friday.
With the game tied at 67, Henderson drove the lane and threw up a floater that dropped in with 42 seconds left to give the Mount (1-1) the lead for good. Selina Mann (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield) then sealed the victory with a free throw with 15 seconds remaining. The Broncs (1-2) missed a pair of three's in the final seven seconds.
Henderson went 9-for-15 from the floor, 6 of 8 from behind the arc and 6 of 7 from the free throw line to notch a career-best 30 points. She also added eight rebounds, four steals and three assists. Henderson became the first Mountaineer player to score 30 points in a game since Brianna Gauthier posted 32 points in her final regular season contest against Bryant on Mar. 2, 2009.
Kayla Grossett (Toronto, Ontario/David and Mary Thompson C.I.) added 14 points while Mann tallied seven points, six rebounds, five assists and five steals in the winning effort.
MyNeshia McKenzie paced Rider with 19 points while Caitlin Bopp added 18 points and 12 rebounds and Sironda Chambers posted 15 points in the loss.
Mount St. Mary's used a strong second half to rally past the Broncs to earn its first win of the season.
Trailing by seven points with 11:06 remaining, the Mount went on a 17-3 run to take a 61-54 lead with 5:29 left. Henderson and Tara Longeran (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) fueled the run with six points each.
Rider came back to tie the game at 63 with 3:01 remaining thanks to a 9-2 run. The Mount would grab the lead two more times only to see the Broncs knot the game up again until Henderson scored in the paint to give the Mountaineers the lead for good.
The first half was a seesaw battle until Rider closed the first half on a 17-7 run to go into the locker room with a 39-31 lead.
With the Mount clinging to a 24-22 lead, Bopp tied the game at 24 at 5:44 before McKenzie nailed two free throws at 5:20 and Chambers scored in the lane at 4:49 for a 28-24 edge.
Mann and Mikal Johnson traded layups before Henderson drained two charity tosses at 2:41 to trim the margin to 30-28. The Broncs then scored the next seven points to take their last lead of the half at 37-28. McKenzie drained a trey at 2:25 before Bopp scored in the lane at 1:46 and McKenzie converted two charity tosses at 1:24 for a nine-point lead.
Jody Chickey (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) then scored the next three points for the Mountaineers after hitting the second of two free throws at 1:15 and scoring in the paint with 37 second left to cut the deficit to 37-31, but Candace Brown scored in the paint in the final 10 seconds to give Rider a 39-31 lead at the break.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Monday in the squad's home opener against Campbell. Game time is 7 p.m.
