Women's Basketball Falls In Season Opener At Fifth-Ranked Maryland
COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Fifth-ranked Maryland defeated Mount St. Mary's 88-47 in the non-conference women's basketball action on Friday. It was the season opener for both teams.
Kayla Grossett (Toronto, Ontario/David and Mary Thompson C.I.) paced the Mount (0-1) with 17 points and five rebounds while Jessie Kaufman (Damascus, Md./Damascus) chipped in eight points in the loss.
Tianna Hawkins fueled theTerrapins (1-0) with 18 points and 10 rebounds while Alicia DeVaughn also recorded a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Alyssa Thomas added 14 points and Malina Howard notched 12 points in the winning effort.
Mount St. Mary's battled the fifth-ranked team in the country close for nearly 14 minutes in the first half before the defending Atlantic Coast Conference team pulled away for its fifth-straight win in the series.
Jenn Carney (Drexel Hills, Pa./Archbishop Carroll), who was making her first collegiate start, gave the Mount a 2-0 lead against the nationally-ranked program with two free throws at 18:50.
Hawkins and DeVaughn each scored a bucket to give the Terrapins a 4-2 lead with 18:01 left in the first half. Selina Mann (Gainesville, Md./Battlefield) tied the game at 4 at 17:32 before Thomas and Carney traded baskets to keep the game knotted at 6 with 17:10 on the clock.
Maryland then rolled off the next eight points thanks to four points by Hawkins and a basket by Thomas and Laurin Mincy for a 14-6 lead with 13:23 on the clock. The Terrapins maintained an eight-point advantage at 18-10 with 9:34 left in the stanza.
The Mountaineers then responded with consecutive baskets by Sydney Henderson (Richmond, Va./Atlee) and Grossett to trim the margin to 18-14. The Mount then had a chance to make it a one possession game, but could not convert.
The Terrapins answered by scoring 30 of the final 39 points take a 48-23 advantage going into the locker room. Maryland outscored the Mount 40-24 in the second half to come away with an 88-47 victory.
Mann, a 2012 All-Northeast Conference second-team, selection, posted four points, four rebounds, four steals and three assists on the night. The senior paced the team last season in assists, steals and rebounds.
Redshirt sophomore Jacqueline Brewer (Martinsburg, W. Va./Martinsburg) made her Mount St. Mary's debut after sitting out the 2011-12 season due to NCAA Division I transfer regulations. Brewer finished with five points and five rebounds in 19 minutes. Freshman Jody Chickey (Bethlehem, Pa./Liberty) made her collegiate debut and registered her first collegiate points with 20 seconds left in the contest.
The Mount battled a ranked opponent for the 10th time since moving to Division I and playing the No. 5 team in the country was the highest ranking the squad has faced in team history.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Nov. 16 at Rider. Game time is 7 p.m.
