EMMITSBURG, Md. – The Mount St. Mary's women's basketball team has been picked seventh in the Northeast Conference (NEC) Preseason Coaches Poll, announced during the Social Media Day at the Barclay Center in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Tuesday.
Quinnipiac picked up seven of the 12 first-place votes to be tabbed as the preseason favorite. The defending NEC regular season and tournament champions Sacred Heart Pioneers nabbed four first-place votes to finish second in the poll while Monmouth secured the final first-place nod to finish third in the poll. Saint Francis (Pa.), Robert Morris, LIU Brooklyn, the Mount, Central Connecticut State, Bryant, Fairleigh Dickinson, St. Francis (N.Y.) and Wagner round out the 12-team poll. Bryant, who just completed its five-year transition to Division I, will be eligible for the NEC Tournament for the first time in 2012-13.
Mount St. Mary's returns its top six scorers from last season, including All-NEC second-team performer Selina Mann (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield). The senior paced the team in rebounding (5.0 rebounds per game), assists (147) and steals (119) while averaging 6.1 points per game. Redshirt junior Sydney Henderson (Mechanicsville, Va./Atlee) paced the team last season with 12.0 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. Junior Jessie Kaufman (Damascus, Md./Damascus) ranked second on the team with 8.4 points and 3.5 rebounds per game while fellow junior Ashley Christie (Miamisburg, Ohio/Archbishop Alter) was third on the team with 8.0 points and 2.8 rebounds per game.
The Mount posted a 14-16 overall record in 2011-12 and a 10-8 mark in NEC play. The Mount notched its first winning season in the circuit since 2006-07 and saw a six-game improvement from 2010-11. The squad advanced to the NEC Tournament for the 21st time in 23 season and was edged by Quinnipiac 65-61 in the quarterfinals last season.
