Mann Ties Single-Game Program Record For Steals In 55-46 Loss To Sacred Heart
EMMITSBURG, Md. - Sacred Heart defeated Mount St. Mary's 55-46 in Northeast Conference (NEC) women's basketball action on Monday.
Selina Mann (Gainesville, Va./Battlefield) paced the Mount (4-15, 1-7 NEC) with her second career double-double after finishing the game with 14 points and a program-record 10 steals. The sophomore became the third player in program history and the second player in Mount Division I history to record 10 steals in a game. She joins Karla Green (at Richmond, Feb. 20, 1983) and Kim Rhock (St. Francis (N.Y.), Feb. 13, 1990) as the only players in program history to reach double-digit thefts. Mann becomes the second player to record a double-double with points and steals, although Rhock finished her game against the Terriers with a triple-double (19 points, 14 rebounds and 10 steals).
Mary Dunn (Whippany, N.J./Morris Catholic) added 11 points and six rebounds in the loss. Dunn moved into 23rd place in program history with 1,046 points and seventh place in career rebounds with 769 caroms.
Kiley Evan fueled the Pioneers (11-8, 5-3 NEC) with 17 points while Callan Taylor tallied 14 points and 13 rebounds in the winning effort.
Mount St. Mary's jumped out to an eight-point advantage four times in the first 10 minutes of the game before Sacred Heart rallied and went on for its seventh-straight win against the Mountaineers.
The Mount scored the first eight points of the game. Tara Lonergan (Rockville Centre, N.Y./South Side) started the scoring with a jumper at 18:31 before Mann converted two free throws at 17:46 for a 4-0 edge. Dunn then scored in the paint at 16:39 and Sandra Andresson (Tallinn, Estonia/Audentes School) hit a basket at 15:50 for an 8-0 edge.
Sacred Heart and Mount St. Mary's battled for the next five minutes, but the Mount restored an eight-point advantage three times before the Pioneers took the lead for good thanks to a 13-0 run.
With the Mountaineers holding a 16-8 lead, Evans started the run with a layup at 10:38 and a 3-pointer at 9:50. Morgan Merriman cut the deficit to 16-15 on a basket in the lane at 9:04 before Evans nailed a trey at 8:34 to give Sacred Heart the lead for good. Taylor then converted a traditional 3-point play at 7:43 to give the Pioneers a 21-16 lead. Lonergan stopped the surge with two free throws at 7:28.
Sacred Heart extended its lead to 28-20 with 2:28 left in the frame before Mann drilled a jumper at 2:10 and Jessie Kaufman (Damascus, Md./Damascus) hit a 3-pointer with 34 ticks left to cut the deficit to 28-25 going into the locker room.
Maggie Cosgrove nailed a 3-pointer to start the second half to hand the Pioneers a 31-25 lead, but Mann and Lonergan scored on consecutive possessions to trim the margin to 31-29 with 18:17 remaining. Sacred Heart responded with a 20-10 run to grab a 51-39 advantage with 4:07 left. Taylor sparked the run with seven points. Mount St. Mary's was able to cut it to nine points twice in the final minute, but could get no closer the rest of the way.
The Mount returns to action on Saturday with its first trip to Smithfield, R.I., to face Bryant on Saturday. Game time is 1 p.m.
