May 3, 2017--Mount St. Mary's track and field athletes Julian Woods and Kelly Yanucil each won Northeast Conference Athlete of the week honors this week. The pair of seniors had standout performances at the Penn Relays last week to earn the weekly conference awards.
Yanucil was named the NEC Women's Field Athlete of the Week after earning a gold medal for the second year in a row at the Penn Relays with a record shattering 51.75m Javelin throw, beating the previous record of 51.07m that she set last year at the 2016 NCAA Outdoor Championships. This year's gold medal winning throw was 1.60m better than the winning throw she produced last year. Yanucil is currently the ECAC leader by more than three meters and ranks eighth overall on the NCAA Division 1 East Region. The senior also sits at 18th overall on the national leader board and owns the second best mark by an athlete from a non DI FBS Conference.
Woods cut a second off his prior seasonal best time in the 400m hurdles to anchor himself as the NEC's no. 1 seed. The senior Mountaineer finished first in the Penn Relays with a time of 51.72, topping the NEC by more than 2.0 seconds and ranking Woods third overall among the IC4A Championship qualifiers. Woods is currently 17th amongst NCAA Division 1 East Region leaders and is primed for a NEC crown in the 110m high hurdles as he ranks fourth entering this weekend's NEC Conference Championships.
The Mount's Track and Field teams return to action this weekend at the NEC Conference Championships. The event will be held at the Mount's Morgan Track on May 6 and 7.
