Mount St. Mary's Track and Field Opens Indoor Season at Navy

December 1, 2016--The Mount St. Mary's men's and women's track and field teams will head to the Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md., this weekend to compete in the Navy Lid Lifter (Women) and Navy Invitational (Men).  Women's competition will be today and the men will follow on Saturday.

When asked about the upcoming events this weekend, Head Coach Jay Phillips said, "The start of the indoor season is an exciting time!  We are looking for everyone to compete.  For us, that's high energy, toughness, and focus.  We're a close group, it's going to be fun seeing the 2016-2017 team out there together for the first time!"

The Navy Invitational for the men will commence on Saturday.  Seniors Josh Poole, Julian Woods, and Chase Boyle will look to start their senior year off strong, after a convincing 2015-2016 campaign which resulted in three gold medals in NEC competition and many top three finishes.

Woods did not compete at the Naval Academy last year, but his indoor season was stellar in the 60 meter hurdles finishing third at George Mason, second at the Monmouth Winter Collegiate Open, and taking gold at the NEC Indoor Championships.  Poole took home the bronze medal in the 400 meter dash at Navy last year, and went on to win the 200 at George Mason, and place in the top five at the NEC Championships.  Boyle took first place in the weight throw last year at the Navy Invitational and the Father Diamond Invitational before capping off the season with a gold medal in hammer throw at the NEC Championships.

On the women's side, Mount standout Elissa Ingram, will look to defend her Navy Lid Lifter title from 2015. Ingram took first place last year with a height of 3.45m (11' 3.75"). Natalia Hinton will be a front runner in the long jump coming off of a stellar 2015-2016 season, taking gold in NEC Indoor and Outdoor Championships.  Erin Sample will seek to win the shot put competition this weekend after a strong freshman year earning herself the second spot on the Mount's all time shot put list.

The meet this weekend will feature a strong field including athletes from Towson, Howard, Morgan State, Loyola, McDaniel, Bowie, American, Navy, and of course the Mount.
