Women's Swimming Looks To Make A Splash This Weekend At Radford Invitational

opening dive... The Mount women's swimming team will travel to the Radford Invitational starting on Thursday. The three-day event will feature UNC Asheville, Millersville, North Carolina A&T, Campbell, Mount St. Mary's and Radford. The trials will begin at 10 a.m. on the first day and 9 a.m. on Saturday while the finals will take place at 6 p.m. on the first two days and 4 p.m. on Saturday.

last time at that event… Mount St. Mary's placed seventh at the Radford Invitational on Nov. 17-19. Erin Regan won the 200 fly (2:06.99). Cat Coppler finished third in the 100 back (59.70) and fifth in the 200 back (2:08.86). Courtney Griffith placed third in the 100 fly (58.31) while Patricia Yam placed fourth (58.31) and Regan placed sixth (58.73) in the 100 fly. The Mount posted a pair of second-place finishes in relays. Coppler, Mollie Walsh, Anne Thelen and Griffith placed second in the 200-free relay (1:38.39) while Coppler, Regan, Griffith and Yam placed second in the 800-free relay (7:48.06).

last splash… Erin Regan and Cat Coppler each won three individual events to lead the Mount St. Mary's women's swimming team to a pair of wins on Oct. 27. The Mount defeated VMI 183-59 and McDaniel 152-108 in the squad's first home meet of the season. Coppler won the 200 free (2:10.44), the 200 back (2:29.44) and the 200 IM (2:31.65) while Regan took home wins in the 200 fly (2:30.88), 100 free (1:01.25) and the 100 fly (1:08.47) on the afternoon. Coppler also opened the competition by swimming in the winning 200-medley relay (2:06.88). After Coppler swam the first leg, Anne Thelen, Mollie Walsh and Lena Castro Marquez finished up the first-place finish. Regan was also a part of a winning relay. The sophomore followed Castro in the 200-free relay (1:53.91) before Walsh and Thelen closed out the victory. Kaitlyn Powell won the 800 free (10:07.43) and finished third in the 200 fly (2:46.22) and the 400 free (4:56.54). Walsh also recorded a first-place standing on the day in the 50 free (28.63) for the Mountaineers. Patricia Yam finished second in the 100 fly (1:10.47) and third in the 100 back (1:10.59) and the 200 back (2:40.48). Thelen posted second-place standings in the 100 breast (1:22.11) and the 200 breast (2:56.97). Castro placed second in the 200 free (2:21.32) while Victoria Shaw was second in the 800 free (10:22.38).

next time in the water... The Mount travels to James Madison on Dec. 1 for a tri-meet with the Dukes and Radford.

preseason poll… The Mount St. Mary's women's swimming team has been picked fifth in the Northeast Conference (NEC) Preseason Coaches Poll. Three-time champion Saint Francis (Pa.) picked up five of the seven first-place votes to be tabbed as the preseason favorite. Bryant and Wagner each received a first-place nod to be picked second while Central Connecticut State, the Mount, St. Francis (N.Y.) and Sacred Heart rounded out the seven-team poll.

home pool advantage in 2012-13... Mount St. Mary's will host three events this season, starting against VMI and McDaniel on Oct. 27. The Mount will also host Duquesne on Jan. 12 and Loyola on Feb. 2. The Mount holds a 17-6 mark at home, including a 6-0 record in 2010-11, 4-1 record in 2008-09 and a 3-1 standing in 2007-08.

about the team... Head coach Neil Yost's 2012-13 team is comprised of one senior (Courtney Griffith) and seven juniors (Cat Coppler, Emily Dargay, Jessica Gardner, Nicole Helmick, Victoria Shaw, Mollie Walsh and Patricia Yam) and five sophomores (Rebecca Kasda, Amanda Malmstrom, Catherine Sukovich, Erin Regan, Anne Thelen) and three freshmen (Lena Castro Marquez, Katie Powell, Kaitlyn Warner).

record-setting season… Sophomore Erin Regan was named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Meet after winning the 200 fly and also finished second in the 100 fly last season. It was the first time a Mount swimmer won an event at the championships and the first major award for the team. Senior Courtney Griffith finished third in the 50 free and the 100 fly to earn a pair of All-NEC third-team selections while senior Patricia Yam nabbed All-NEC third-team honors for her third-place standing in the 200 fly for the second-straight season. The Mount finished the NEC Swimming & Diving Championships with a program-record 348 points.

local product... Senior Courtney Griffith hails from Westminster, Md. A graduate of Westminster High School, the sophomore was a member of the Eagles Club at McDonough High School for four years. The senior became the first player in program history to earn an All-Northeast Conference selection after finishing second in the 100 fly (56.06) in 2011. She also placed fourth in the 50 free and seventh in the 100 free as a sophomore and was third in the 50 free and 100 fly as a junior..

new to the mountain... Head coach Neil Yost has added three newcomers to his 2012-13 roster. Freshmen Lena Castro Marquez, Katie Powell and Kaitlyn Warner each joined the team this season.

about the coach... Neil Yost, who enters his eighth season, became the first head coach in program history. Yost came to the Mount with nine years of coaching experience. Since 2002, Yost was the men's and women's swimming coach at Waynesboro High School. He also served as the head swimming coach and aquatics director at the Waynesboro Area YMCA. Before coaching at Waynesboro High School he was the aquatics director at the Westport/Weston YMCA from 2001-02. He was also the assistant swimming coach at Bloomsburg University and the head coach at the Central Columbia Aquatics Club for two years after serving as an assistant coach for two years. Yost started his coaching career as an assistant coach at the Central Columbia Aquatics High School from 1996-2000.
