Women's Swimming Makes 2012-13 Home Debut Against VMI And McDaniel On Saturday

The Mount women's swimming team will make their 2012-13 home debut on Saturday when it hosts VMI and McDaniel. The Mount is 9-0 against the Keydets and the Mountaineers won the initial meeting against the Green Terror last season.

last time against the keydets… Cat Coppler and Patricia Yam each won two events to pace the Mount St. Mary's women's swimming team to seven individual victories and a pair of team wins on Oct. 28, 2011. The Mount beat Manhattan 115-76 and VMI 115-56 on the evening. Coppler won the 400 IM (5:17.36) and the 100 fly (1:00.86) while Yam won the 200 free (2:15.52) and the 100 back (1:09.23). The Mountaineers also posted wins by Mollie Walsh in the 50 free (27.99), Courtney Griffith in the 100 fly (1:06.24) and Erin Regan in the 1500 free (19:06.74). Regan also placed second in the 100 fly (1:07.76). Amanda Malmstrom finished second in the 1500 free (19:36.24) and third in the 400 IM (5:44.59). Anne Thelen placed second in the 50 free (28.64) and Catherine Sukovich finished third in the 100 free (1:05.39). Coppler, Thelan, Yam and Walsh also teamed up to win the 400-medley relay (4:40.54) while Malmstrom, Murphy Alafoginis, Nicole Helmick and Jessica Gardner placed second in the 200-free (2:01.38).

last time against the green terror… The trio of Cat Coppler, Patricia Yam and Erin Regan each won two events to pace the Mount St. Mary's women's swimming team to a pair of wins on Oct. 29, 2011. The Mount defeated Manhattan 131-61 and McDaniel 113-77 on the day. Coppler won the 200 IM (2:32.28) and the 200 back (2:32.47) while Yam was victories in the 200 free (2:15.55) and the 400 free (4:47.42). The duo paced the Mountaineers with four victories in the two days. Regan won the 800 free (9:47.08) and the 200 fly (2:30.00). Courtney Griffith finished first in the 50 free (27.90) and Anne Thelen won the 100 free (1:02.02). Mollie Walsh placed second in the 50 free (28.13) and third in the 200 back (2:36.79) while Amanda Malmstrom finished second in the 200 free (2:21.89). Victoria Shaw posted third-place finishes in the 800 free (10:33.18) and the 400 free (5:08.25). The relay team of Yam, Murphy Alafoginis, Malmstrom and Regan won the 800-free relay (9:20.89) while Coppler, Thelan, Walsh and Catherine Sukovich finished second in the 200-medley relay (2:07.43).

last splash… Erin Regan won two events to lead the Mount St. Mary's women's swimming team against Saint Francis (Pa.) on Oct. 13. The Red Flash downed the Mount, 149-99. Regan, the 2012 Northeast Conference Rookie of the Meet, won the 200 fly (2:11.47) and the 500 free (5:16.95) in the squad's first dual meet of the year. The sophomore was also a member of the winning 400-free relay team and the third place 200-medley relay. Junior Cat Coppler won the 200 IM (2:14.65) while finishing second in the 200 back (2:11.88) and third in the 100 back (1:01.08). Fellow junior Patricia Yam recorded the squad's final first-place standing on the afternoon in the 100 fly (1:02.73). Mollie Walsh finished second in the 50 free (25.84) and Catherine Sukovich was second in the 100 free (57.78) while Anne Thelen was second in the 100 fly (1:05.89) and freshman Kaitlyn Warner was second in the 200 IM (2:32.70). Freshman Katie Powell placed third in the 200 free (2:07.02). The 200-medley relay team of Warner, Thelen, Regan and Coppler finished third (1:57.63) while Regan, Walsh, Sukovich and Lena Castro Marquez teamed up to win the 400-free relay (3:56.13).

next time in the water... The Mount returns to action at the Radford Invitational on Nov. 15-17.

preseason poll… The Mount St. Mary's women's swimming team has been picked fifth in the Northeast Conference (NEC) Preseason Coaches Poll. Three-time champion Saint Francis (Pa.) picked up five of the seven first-place votes to be tabbed as the preseason favorite. Bryant and Wagner each received a first-place nod to be picked second while Central Connecticut State, the Mount, St. Francis (N.Y.) and Sacred Heart rounded out the seven-team poll.

home pool advantage in 2012-13... Mount St. Mary's will host three events this season, starting against VMI and McDaniel on Oct. 27. The Mount will also host Duquesne on Jan. 12 and Loyola on Feb. 2. The Mount holds a 17-6 mark at home, including a 6-0 record in 2010-11, 4-1 record in 2008-09 and a 3-1 standing in 2007-08.

about the team... Head coach Neil Yost's 2012-13 team is comprised of one senior (Courtney Griffith) and seven juniors (Cat Coppler, Emily Dargay, Jessica Gardner, Nicole Helmick, Victoria Shaw, Mollie Walsh and Patricia Yam) and five sophomores (Rebecca Kasda, Amanda Malmstrom, Catherine Sukovich, Erin Regan, Anne Thelen) and three freshmen (Lena Castro Marquez, Katie Powell, Kaitlyn Warner).

record-setting season… Sophomore Erin Regan was named the Northeast Conference Rookie of the Meet after winning the 200 fly and also finished second in the 100 fly last season. It was the first time a Mount swimmer won an event at the championships and the first major award for the team. Senior Courtney Griffith finished third in the 50 free and the 100 fly to earn a pair of All-NEC third-team selections while senior Patricia Yam nabbed All-NEC third-team honors for her third-place standing in the 200 fly for the second-straight season. The Mount finished the NEC Swimming & Diving Championships with a program-record 348 points.

local product... Senior Courtney Griffith hails from Westminster, Md. A graduate of Westminster High School, the sophomore was a member of the Eagles Club at McDonough High School for four years. The senior became the first player in program history to earn an All-Northeast Conference selection after finishing second in the 100 fly (56.06) in 2011. She also placed fourth in the 50 free and seventh in the 100 free as a sophomore and was third in the 50 free and 100 fly as a junior..

new to the mountain... Head coach Neil Yost has added three newcomers to his 2012-13 roster. Freshmen Lena Castro Marquez, Katie Powell and Kaitlyn Warner each joined the team this season.

about the coach... Neil Yost, who enters his eighth season, became the first head coach in program history. Yost came to the Mount with nine years of coaching experience. Since 2002, Yost was the men's and women's swimming coach at Waynesboro High School. He also served as the head swimming coach and aquatics director at the Waynesboro Area YMCA. Before coaching at Waynesboro High School he was the aquatics director at the Westport/Weston YMCA from 2001-02. He was also the assistant swimming coach at Bloomsburg University and the head coach at the Central Columbia Aquatics Club for two years after serving as an assistant coach for two years. Yost started his coaching career as an assistant coach at the Central Columbia Aquatics High School from 1996-2000.
