Baltimore, Md. (March 10, 2013)-- Nicole Pagano and Hayley Stankan combined to pitch a no-hitter as Mount St. Mary's defeated Howard, 8-0, in the second game of the UMBC Dawg Pound Invitational on Sunday. Rachel Gavigan went 3-3 from the plate with a grand slam in the win.
In the first game on the day, the Mount (2-12) fell to Princeton, 4-2, despite two RBIs from Bre Lohman.
In the Howard game, Stankan pitched the first two innings, allowing two walks and no hits. Pagano shut down the Bison the rest of the way, going the final four innings striking out nine while not allowing a walk or a hit.
The Mount scored a run in the first on a Howard fielding error then broke the game wide open with six more runs in the bottom of the sixth. The Mountaineers did most of their damage on a grand slam to left field by Gavigan to plate Cat Clifford, Kendra Hayward and Katy Bobbitt
The Mount recorded seven hits in the victory.
In the first game against Princeton, the Tigers jumped out to a 4-0 lead through two innings on five hits and one Mount error.
The score remained 4-0 until the top of the seventh when the Mount loaded the bases before Lohman's pinch-hit double down the left field line scored Hayward and Alexa Tuck. The rally fell just short, however, as the Tigers escaped the inning without allowing any more runs.
The Mountaineers will return to UMBC to face the Retrievers on Tuesday, March 12, at 2 p.m.
