Mount St. Mary's Downed by Drake, 6-5, in Extra Innings
Mount St. Mary's lost to Drake, 6-5, in extra innings at the University of Florida Tournament on Sunday. Cat Clifford paced the Mount, going 2-for-4 with a solo home run in the loss.
Mount St. Mary's (1-9) took a 3-0 lead after three innings of play. Clifford put the Mount in the lead with a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning. It was her team-leading fourth home run of the year.
The Mountaineers added to the lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third. The Mount stole home for both runs in the inning. With runners on first and third, Kendra Hayward stole home on a double steal. Later in the inning, with runners on first and third again, Megan Baker stole home.
The Mount maintained the lead until the top of the seventh when Drake rallied with three runs to tie the game and force extra innings. With one out and the bases loaded, Rebekah Schmidt cleared the bases with a double to tie the game at 3-3.
An RBI triple in the top of the eighth gave Drake a 4-3 advantage, but the Mount evened the score in the bottom of the inning. Pinch-runner Alexa Tuck was placed on second due to the international tiebreaker rule. She moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, and scampered home on a wild pitch.
Schmidt came up with the big hit in the top of the ninth with a two-run single to give Drake a 6-4 lead. Rachel Teti singled home Erin Leddy to cut the Mount deficit to 6-5 in the bottom of the inning, but the Mount was unable to get the tying run home.
Clifford went 2-for-4 with a home run while Marisa Mayes was 2-for-4 at the plate for the Mount as well. On the mound, Nicole Pagano allowed three runs in 6.1 innings with five strikeouts. Danielle Cummings took the loss in relief, allowing one earned run in 2.2 innings.
The Mount is back in action on March 9-10 at the UMBC Tournament.
