Mount St. Mary's Opens 2013 Softball Season at the Jacksonville University Invitational on Friday

MOUNT UPDATE:  The Mount opens the 2013 season at the Jacksonville University Tournament on Friday morning.  The Mount finished 17-34 overall and 8-12 in the Northeast Conference last season.  Nicole Pagano was the Mount's top pitcher, going 11-11 with a 1.47 ERA and 147 strikeouts in 151.0 innings of work.  At the plate, Liz Christiansen was the top hitter, leading the squad in average (.320), hits (47), doubles (9), home runs (9) and RBI (43).

ABOUT DELAWARE:  Delaware went 4-0 at the Jimmy John's Lion Classic II hosted by Southeastern Louisiana 2 weekends ago.  The Blue Hens won to Southeastern Louisiana (4-2, 7 inn.), Southern (3-1, 7 inn.), UT-Martin (7-2, 7 inn.) and Louisiana Tech (4-3, 8 inn.).

ABOUT SOUTH ALABAMA:  South Alabama went 5-0 at the Mardi Gras Invitational hosted by University of South Alabama this past weekend.  The Jaguars won to Central Arkansas twice (11-2, 6 inn. and 7-4), Mississippi (4-2, 7 inn.), Lamar (8-0, 5 inn.) and Jackson State (10-2, 5 inn.).

ABOUT SETON HALL:  Seton Hall went 2-2 at the Hampton Inn Campbell Stampede Tournament hosted by Campbell University 2 weekends ago. The Pirates won to St. Bonaventure (12-6, 7 inn.) and Robert Morris (5-3, 7 inn.). The Pirates fell to George Washington (0-8, 5 inn.) and Campbell (6-7, 8 inn.).

ABOUT JACKSONVILLE:  Jacksonville defeated Florida A&M, 6-4, on Wednesday night to improve to 8-3 on the season.  Last weekend, the Dolphins went 4-1 at the Jacksonville University Tournament.  Jacksonville defeated Stony Brook twice (6-1, 7 inn. and 9-1, 7 inn.), Ohio State (4-2, 7 inn.) and Bethune Cookman (3-2, 7 inn.). The Dolphins fell to Louisville (9-0, 7 inn.). 

THE ALL-TIME SERIES:  Delaware holds a 15-0 lead in the all-time series that began in 1993. The Mount is 2-2 all-time against Seton Hall, and this will be the first-ever meeting against South Alabama and Jacksonville.

ALL-CONFERENCE SELECTIONS:  Liz Christiansen and Nicole Pagano each garnered All-Northeast Conference honors last year.  Christiansen was First Team All-NEC after leading the Mount in average (.320), hits (47), doubles (9), home runs (9), RBIs (34) and total bases (83).  She hit .355 in NEC play with five home runs and 15 RBI.  She is the Mount's all-time leader with 24 career home runs and is second with 96 RBIs.  Pagano was a Second Team All-NEC selection at the pitcher spot.  Pagano went 11-11 with a 1.47 ERA and 147 strikeouts in 151.0 innings of work. She had a perfect game on March 16 against Rhode Island while adding her second no-hitter of the year against UMBC. 

PRESEASON PICKS:  The Mount was picked to finish ninth in the annual Northeast Conference preseason coaches poll.  Robert Morris was tabbed as the favorite with six first place votes, followed by defending tournament champion LIU Brooklyn, who was picked second with five first-place votes.  Central Connecticut picked third, while Monmouth and Bryant round out the top five. Quinnipiac was voted sixth, followed by Sacred Heart, Saint Francis U, Mount St. Mary's, Wagner and Fairleigh Dickinson.

UP NEXT:  The Mount will stay in Florida to play St. Bonaventure and North Florida. They will then compete in the University of Florida Tournament on March 1-3, playing against Florida A&M, Presbyterian and Drake.
