Towson Takes Two From Softball
EMMITSBURG, Md. – Towson swept a non-conference softball doubleheader against Mount St. Mary's on Wednesday. The Tigers took the opener 3-0 and then won the nightcap, 8-4.
Danni Cummings (Owings, Md./Northern) pitched seven scoreless innings of relief over the two games with five strikeouts for the Mount (15-30) while Liz Christiansen (Etters, Pa./Red Land) posted three hits and an RBI in the two games.
Erika Stasch paced the Tigers (25-23) with two hits and three RBIs in the opener and Missy McCormick posted a five-hit shutout with seven strikeouts to win the first game.
Mount St. Mary's scored three times in the first innings of the nightcap only to see Towson post eight of the final nine runs to complete the sweep.
The Mountaineers scored three times in the first inning to take a 3-0 lead. Erin Leddy (Great Mills, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) singled up the middle and touched home on Lindsey Ruhle's (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional) double down the left field line. Cat Clifford singled through the left side to plate Ruhle and Alyssa Silipino (Hammonton, N.J./Hammontown) gave Mount St. Mary's a three-run lead with opposite field single.
The Tigers answered with six runs in the second to take the lead for good. Stasch, Courtney Wittner and Kelli Lyons each recorded RBIs to tie the game. After an error, Towson scored three unearned runs on a Hailey Balk two-run single and a Brianna Jones RBI single to take a 6-3 advantage.
The Mount trimmed the margin to 6-4 in the fourth after Chloe Mizianty (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad) singled and touched home on Christiansen's double to right center.
The Tigers scored two insurance run in the fifth thanks to RBI singles by Wittner and Lyons to seal the 8-4 victory.
Amanda Sadowl (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) tossed four innings and took the loss in the second game.
In the opener, Towson scored twice in the first on a Strasch two-run single through the left side and added a run in the third on a Strasch RBI single through the right side for a 3-0 win.
Nicole Pagano (Berlin, N.J./St. Joseph) pitched the first three innings of the first game and took the loss.
Mount St. Mary's returned to action on Saturday at Monmouth. Game time is 1 p.m.
