Niagara Takes Two From Softball
NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. – Niagara swept a non-conference softball doubleheader on Friday. The Purple Eagles won 2-1 and 4-1 on the afternoon.
Liz Christiansen (Etters, Pa./Red Land) had an RBI double in the opener for the Mount (10-25) while Lindsey Ruhle (Wanaque, N.J./Lakeland Regional) posted a run-scoring double in the nightcap. Danni Cummings (Owings, Md./Northern) took the loss in the first game after allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits with six strikeouts.
Becky Zill registered three RBIs, two hits and a run scored for Niagara (7-18) and Jennifer Hare added two hits and an RBI in the opener.
In the opener, the Mountaineers grabbed the early lead, but the Purple Eagles posted a run in the first and the third to come away with a 2-1 win.
Katy Bobbitt (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle-Antrim) was hit by a pitch and came around to score of Christiansen's RBI double down the left field line to plate Bobbitt and give Mount St. Mary's a 1-0 edge in the first. It was the only hit for the Mount in the game and the squad did not have a base runner in the final six innings.
The lead was short lived after Niagara tied the game on a Zill sacrifice fly in the bottom of the inning to even the score at 1. Hare then singled up the middle to score the decisive run in the third.
In the nightcap, the Purple Eagles jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning en route to a 4-1 victory to complete the twinbill sweep.
Zill and Alexis Wayne each played a run in the first to give Niagara a two-run lead after the first inning.
Alexa Tuck (Chester, Va./Thomas Dale) singled to right field and touched home on Ruhle's double to right center to trim the margin to 2-1 in the second.
The Purple Raiders added a run in the fifth on a Zill run-scoring double and a run in the sixth on a Jaclyn Russell sacrifice fly for a 4-1 win.
Amanda Sadowl (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) allowed four runs (three earned) on six hits with five strikeouts in the loss.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Wednesday at UMBC. Game time is 3 p.m.
