Sacred Heart Takes Two From Softball
EMMITSBURG, Md. - Sacred Heart swept a Northeast Conference (NEC) softball doubleheader on Sunday. The Pioneers won the opener 1-0 and then took the nightcap, 2-1.
Chloe Mizianty (Carlsbad, Calif./Carlsbad) paced the Mount (7-20, 1-3 NEC) with three hits while Alyssa Silipino (Hammonton, N.J./Hammonton) plated the squad's lone run of the afternoon on a bases loaded walk.
Nicole Sidor tossed a two-hit shutout in the opener for Sacred Heart (10-14, 3-1 NEC) and then picked up the save after pitching the final two innings in the second game.
In the nightcap, Sacred Heart scored single runs in the third and fourth to grab a 2-1 lead and held off a Mount comeback attempt to sweep the twinbill.
Alyssa Garza singled to right field to open the third inning and touched home on a throwing error with two outs to give the Pioneers a 1-0 lead. Kate Nadler increased the advantage to 2-0 with her first collegiate homer in the fourth.
The Mount got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth. Rachel Teti (Mount Airy, Md./Linganore) started the inning with a double to right center. Cat Clifford (Hopewell Junction, N.Y./John Jay) put down a great bunt single to put runners on the corners. After pinch runner Kendra Hayward (Kingston, Pa./Coughlin) stole second, Liz Christiansen (Etters, Pa./Red Land) was intentionally walked to load the bases. Mizianty lined out to first in foul territory and Erin Leddy (Great Mills, Md./St. Mary's Ryken) flied out before Silipino coaxed a bases loaded walk to plate the Mount's lone run of the day. A ground out ended the threat.
Christiansen singled up the middle in the sixth to lead off the inning, but was doubled off on a lineout to end the threat. Maria Santiago (Buena, N.J./Buena Regional) reached on an infield single with two outs in the seventh, but a fly out ended the contest.
Amanda Sadowl (Horsham, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham) took the loss after allowing two runs on seven hits with one strikeout.
In the opening game, Sacred Heart scored in the top of the sixth to squeak out a 1-0 victory. Annie Dreher led off the frame with a double. Liz Tsipouras then blooped a single over the shortstop's head with Dreher remaining at second. Justine Sibthrop moved the runners over with a sacrifice bunt and Dreher then scored the game's only run on a Carley Rudloff sacrifice fly to left.
The Mount's best scoring chance came in the bottom of the third. Bre Lohman (Sharpsburg, Md./Boonsboro) reached on an error with one out and moved to third when Mizianty laced a double down the right field line. Holly Buckel (Finksburg, Md./North Carroll) walked to load the bases with one out, but Sidor escaped the jam with a strikeout and a fly out.
Pitcher Nicole Pagano (Berlin, N.J./St. Joseph) took the loss, allowing one run and five hits with four strikeouts in the complete game.
