Emmitsburg, Md. (October 7, 2017) - The Mount St. Mary's men's tennis team finished up the Mount Invitational on Saturday. Senior, Brandon Wortkotter, recorded first place in both singles and doubles flight A.
Wortkotter claimed first place in flight A after defeating Loyola's Blest Jones in the semifinals and Jackson Wood in the finals. Wortkotter topped Jones 6-4, 6-1 and Wood 6-4, 6-4. Wood took home second place in flight A after beating Bucknell's Max Kane 6-4, 6-2 in the semifinals but was defeated by teammate Wortkotter in the finals.
Parth Sharma won third place in flight B after Loyola's Kyle Gower topped him 6-3, 6-2 in the semifinals but Sharma won by default in the third place match against Zachary Burau. Burau took home fourth place in flight B after being edged 7-5, 6-1 by Luis Marcano from Delaware and then giving teammate Sharma the default win in the third place match.
Jean Armstrong walked away with third place in flight C after being defeated 6-1, 6-3 by Delaware's Dominick Perez but topped Harford Community College's La Gloan 6-4, 4-6, 10-7 in the third place match.
In flight D, the Mount ended up with second place and third place after Chris Lindsey recorded second place and Evan Hine walked away with third place. Lindsey topped HCC's Tesfit 7-6, 6-4 but dropped the finals match 6-1, 6-4 to HCC's John Brett. Hine was defeated 7-6, 7-6 by Brett in the semifinals of the flight but topped Tesfit 6-3, 5-7, 11-9 in the third place match.
Sean McNulty took home fourth place after being topped 6-2, 6-2 in the semifinals to Loyola's Shanker and edged 6-4, 4-6, 10-6 by Moreno, also from Loyola, in the third place/fourth place match.
Wood and Wortkotter won first place in doubles flight A after defeating Delaware's duo, Casselbery and Ramkumar, 7-5 in the semifinals and topping Kane and Gerber, from Bucknell, 6-3 in the finals. Armstrong and Sharma walked away with third place in flight A doubles competition. Kane and Gerber topped Amstrong and Sharma 7-5 but the Mount's duo edged Casselberry and Ramkumar 6-3 in the third place match.
Hine and Burau recorded third place after being blanked 6-0 by Marcano and Perez from Delaware but topped Bucknell's Krantz and Crastes 6-4 in the third place match in flight B of doubles action. Lindsey and McNulty walked away with seventh place after being defeated 6-3 by Loyola's Shortell and Kanuch in the semifinals of the consolation side of flight B but the Mount duo received a default win in the seventh/eighth place match.
The Mountaineer men's tennis team will get ready for the ITA Atlantic Regional Tournament at Liberty University beginning on Thursday, October 19.
