Emmitsburg, Md. (April 14, 2013)-- The Mount men's tennis team finished the regular season with a win against Monmouth on Sunday afternoon. The team improves to 14-6 overall and 4-1 in the NEC. The win also was the sixth straight to finish the season.
The senior tandem of Matthew Blake and Taylor Place picked up another doubles win, defeating Freddy Marcinkowski and Ramy Bekhiet at the one spot, 8-3. Fellow senior Mike Salomon and partner Adam Salam downed Jason Prezant and Jason Rothstein by the same score in the two spot. Mike Zabetakis and Austin Blake completed the sweep with an 8-1 win at the No. 3 spot. The duo defeated Eric Pierce and Joe Talafous.
The Mount won all six singles matches, four of which in straight sets. The senior trio of Matthew Blake, Mike Salomon and Taylor Place each won in straight sets. Blake won 6-1, 6-3 at the one spot over Marcinkowski. Salomon downed Prezant 6-0, 6-1 at No. 3, while Place was a 6-0, 6-1 winner over Talafous at No. 6. Adam Salam and Mike Zabetakis needed three sets to earn their wins. Salam won at the No. 2 spot, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 in a fiercely competed match. Zabetakis lost the first set, 4-6 before rattling off a second set win 6-3. He completed the ferocious comeback with a 10-7 superbreaker win.
The Mount will compete in the NEC Championships in Princeton, N.J. starting on Thursday, April 18. The match time and opponent has yet to be determined.
