Senior Matthew Blake (Garnet Valley, Pa./Salesianum [Del.]) has earned NEC Player of the Week honors for the week of April 9. Blake went 4-0 at No. 1 singles and teamed with fellow senior Taylor Place for a 3-1 doubles record at No. 1 for the week. The Mount went 4-0 on the week with wins over Coppin State, St. Francis U, Morgan State, and Robert Morris. The team sits at 12-6 overall and 3-1 in conference play. This is the first time this year a Mount player has won the award.
Blake started the streak with a win over Oleksiy Krylchuk from Coppin State, 7-5, 6-2. That same match Blake and Place downed Krylchuk and Daniel Nino 8-4. After that he moved on to the Red Flash, where he displaced Washi Gervais; 6-3, 6-2 and he and Place defeated Gervais and Sergio Carvaial 8-5. On Saturday Blake beat Morgan State's Evan Ward 6-3, 6-1 but lost to Evan and brother Eric Ward in doubles, 8-3. He capped the week off with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over the Colonials Matheus Ferreria, and a doubles win over Angus Thomson and Tarun Kishan 8-4. Blake is 18-8 in singles action and 13-12 in doubles action on the year.
The men's tennis team is in action today, April 10 against Loyola. The Catholic Clash begins at 3:30 PM at the MSM Tennis Courts in Emmitsburg.
