Emmitsburg, Md. (December 11, 2012)—Mount St. Mary's men's tennis coach Phil Hammond announced two recruits for the 2013-14 season. Darren Mast (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) and Louis Tonon (Charlotte, NC./Charlotte Latin) both signed National Letters of Intent to attend Mount St. Mary's for the 2013-14 school year.
Mast was a Lancaster-Lebanon League All-Star the past three years, while also earning Lancaster-Lebanon League Co-Player of the Year honors last year. Mast won the Lancaster-Lebanon League singles title last season. He is currently ranked top 40 in the Middle State Section for boys 18's and was nationally ranked as high as 220 in boy's 16's. Mast was selected to represent his section at the World Team Tennis Junior Nationals in 2009-2012. In 2003, Darren and his family were named the USTA National Family of the Year.
Tonon was named to the All-Conference team in the CISAA (Charlotte Independent School Athletic Association) the past two seasons, while also finishing in the Top 8 of the North Carolina State Playoffs the past three years. Tonon is currently ranked #48 in the North Carolina USTA Section for boys 18's and he is #192 in the Southeast on tennis recruiting.net's weekly rankings.
"Both Darren and Louis have had a lot of experience playing at a high level of competitive tennis," said Hammond. "I expect them both to be team leaders, not only with their playing ability, but also with their sportsmanship and their team spirit."
The Mount men return to action February 16, when they travel to Howard to kick off the spring season.
