Lewisburg, Pa. (September 29, 2012)-- The Mount men had a strong showing this past weekend at Bucknell. A few Mountaineers reached the back draw finals of Flights A and B singles.
In doubles play, the Blake/Place tandem picked up another win, downing Gambino and Morris from Bloomsburg in the first round. Blake and Place won 8-2. Matt's younger brother Austin teamed up with Mike Zabetakis to pick up a first round win over Robinson and Tre'vonne Peyton from Coppin State, 8-0. The team of Mike Salomon and Adam Salam lost their first round match, but bounced back with a win over Carney and Christy from Bloomsburg, 8-1. The duo then won their next match 8-1 over CSU's Peyton and Thomas.
In Flight A, Matt Blake picked up a couple of wins, defeating Danel Nino in the first round from CSU, 6-4, 6-2. He then beat Octavio Canibe, whom he defeated in the Flight A Singles final of the Mount Invitational. Blake won 6-4, 6-2. Younger brother Austin lost his first round matchup, but won his back draw match, 6-, 7-5 over Kelly Morque of Bucknell. Salomon picked up two wins, the first over Reginald Robinson of CSU, 6-2, 6-1; then over Josh Katten 2-6, 7-5, 10-4. Doubles partner Adam Salam lost his first round match, but bounced back and reached the back draw finals. Salam downed Olesky Krylchuk of CSU 5-7, 6-3, 10-5. Salam then rolled over Robinson 6-0, 6-0.
Flight B saw a copious amount of Mount victories. Freshman Anthony Adams lost his first round match, but defeated Jeff Norris of Bloomsburg, 5-7, 6-3, 10-7. Patrick McGinley lost his first round match but defeated Mathew Gilbert of Bloomsburg, 6-0, 6-1. He then knocked off Adams 6-0, 6-0. Senior Taylor Place picked up a win over Nathan Gambino of Bloomsburg 6-0, 6-4. Finally, Justin Olexa lost in the first round, but defeated Corey Robinson of Duquesne in the next round 6-0, 6-0. Olexa downed Gambino 7-6, 6-1 to reach the back draw finals.
The Mount St. Mary's men's tennis team returns to action this Saturday, October 6. The men will face the Explorers of LaSalle in Emmitsburg. The match begins at 11:00 AM.
