Men's Tennis Has Big Day at the Mount Invitational
Emmitsburg, Md. (September 14, 2012)-- The men kicked off the Mount Invitational with some big wins, headlined by freshman Austin Blake recording his first collegiate victory in a thrilling two set match.
In Flight A action, senior Matthew Blake rolled to a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Loyola's Connor Pietrak. Sophomore Adam Salam recorded a 7-5, 6-2 victory over another Greyhound, Bobby Gorczakowski. Blake will face Eric Ward of Morgan State, while Salam will face Octavio Canibe of Bucknell in the winners draw.
Flight C was headlined by freshman Austin Blake, getting his first collegiate victory over Bucknell's Chris Tortora 6-3, 7-6 (10-8). He will face Keishi Goto of Loyola tomorrow. Senior Taylor Place picked up a hard fought 6-3, 3-6, 10-6 win over Richard King from Morgan State. Place will face Alex Castro, another Greyhound, who defeated sophomore Patrick McGinley 6-4, 4-6, 10-4.
Finally, Flight D saw a slew of Mount wins. Justin Olexa got it started with a 6-3, 1-6, 10-2 win over Jeff DeSanto of Loyola. He will face junior Maris Biegel who drew a first round bye. Freshman Anthony Adams picked up a 6-3, 4-6, 10-4 three set win over Ryan McFarland of Loyola. Adams will face another Mount teammate in Will Briscoe. Briscoe downed senior Paul Chae, 6-1, 4-1, before Chae was forced to retire after sustaining an ankle injury.
The tournament will resume tomorrow starting at 9:30 AM. The first round of doubles will kick off the action, followed by the 2nd round of singles, then concluding with the 2nd round of doubles.
