Men’s Tennis Splits Final Two Spring Break Matches

Orlando, Fla. — The Mount St. Mary's men's tennis team split their final two matches on their spring break trip by losing to Duquesne 6-1, and ending the trip with a 7-0 win versus Davenport.

The men inherited an early 1-0 deficit against Duquesne by dropping all three doubles matches. The lone point was won by junior Mike Salomon (Haymarket, Va./Seton School) at the No. 4 spot. Mike defeated Alex Aleman in three sets, 3-6, 6-1, 10-8.

The Mount had a quick turnaround, playing Davenport the next day. The men earned a 7-0 victory, dropping only the No. 3 doubles match. The junior duo of Matt Blake and Taylor Place defeated Vitaly Shumilov and Victor Roland, 8-0. At No. 2 doubles, Salomon and freshman Adam Salam beat Matheus Moreira de Carvalho and Christian Woods, 8-0.

Singles action saw the Mount take all six matches, with five of them coming in straight sets. Blake earned a 6-1, 6-0 decision over Vitaly Shumilov at the No.1 spot. Mike Zabetakis and Mike Salomon won in straight sets at the No. 3 and 4 spot receptively. Zabetakis won 6-2, 6-2 and Salomon won 6-1, 6-2. Place earned a 6-2, 6-2 decision over Eric Pell at the No. 5 spot. Freshman Patrick McGinley beat Keaton Briggs, 7-5, 6-2 in the six spot. Salam needed three sets to knock off Victor Roland, 5-7, 6-3, 10-8.

The men return to action March 16, when they face Niagara at home. First serve is at 3:00 p.m. at the Mount Tennis Courts.
