Men's Soccer Ends Season With Scoreless Draw At Saint Francis (Pa.)

LORETTO, Pa. – The Mount St. Mary's men's soccer team concluded its 2012 campaign with a scoreless standstill at Saint Francis (Pa.) in Northeast Conference (NEC) men's soccer action on Sunday.

Peter Steve (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) made nine saves for the Mount (4-12-1, 2-7-1 NEC) while Jimmy Ockford (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) had a team-high four shots on the day.

Daniel Valciciak turned away seven shots for the Red Flash (6-7-5, 4-3-3 NEC) and Wayne Tiller had a team-best four shots on the afternoon.

With a playoff spot on the line for Saint Francis (Pa.), the two teams battled for 110 minutes and the Mount ended its season with its first draw of the season while the Red Flash clinched the final playoff spot thanks to the tie.

In the first overtime period, Steve was tested for the Mountaineers in between the pipes. The graduate student, who was playing in his final collegiate contest, passed the test after making saves on David Trunzo (91:09), Tiller (91:12) and Tamas Maffey-Stumpe (91:36) in a span of 25 seconds.

In the final overtime session, Nick Kolarac posted Saint Francis (Pa.)'s fourth shot in overtime only to see Steve turn the shot away at 103:46. Jimmy Ockford, who all four of his shots on goal on the day, had a chance for Mount St. Mary's, but this time is was Valciciak that came up big with the save at 104:11. Maffey-Stumpe had the final scoring threat in the contest, but missed wide at 107:54.

Saint Francis (Pa.) outshot the Mount 27-13 in the game and also held a 19-7 advantage in corner kicks.

The contest marked the final appearances in a Mountaineer uniform for Steve, Nick Chiarella (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan), Will Jagger (Crowborough, England/Tunbridge Wells Boys Grammar) and Alex Ockford (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury).
