EMMITSBURG, Md. – Monmouth defeated Mount St. Mary's 2-1 in Northeast Conference (NEC) men's soccer action on Sunday.
Joseph Schmid paced the Hawks (8-3-1, 3-1-1 NEC) with a goal and an assist. Ryan Clark also found the twine and Alex Blackburn turned away five shots in the winning effort.
Monmouth broke a tie early in the second half and held on to down Mount St. Mary's and extended its unbeaten streak to 10 games in the series.
With the game tied at 1, Clark found the back of the net off a Schmid feed at 49:15 to give the Hawks the lead for good.
Monmouth got on the scoreboard first when Schmid scored off a pass from David Camacho at 33:55.
The lead did not last long after Plaisance booted in a free kick from 30-yards out for his third goal of the year at 35:33, but the Hawks scored the lone goal in the second half to come away with the victory.
After Monmouth took the lead, the Mount had five shots in the final 40 minutes. Blackburn made the save on a Dillon Johnson (Northport, N.Y./Northport) shot in the 81st minute and corralled Paul Curlings (Shady Side, Md./Louisa County) shot in the 88th minute for the squad's final chance.
The game almost marked the six-year anniversary of the first men's soccer match at Waldron Family Stadium. The Mount opened the venue against the Hawks on Oct. 15, 2006.
Prior to the game, the Mountaineers honored seniors Nick Chiarella (Toms River, N.J./Monsignor Donovan), Will Jagger (Crowborough, England/Tunbridge Wells Boys Grammar), Alex Ockford (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) and Steve. Chiarella started the match for the first time in his career.
