PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – La Salle defeated Mount St. Mary's 2-0 in non-conference men's soccer action on Sunday.
Peter Steve (Dallas, Pa./Dallas) made five saves for the Mount (1-2) while Zoncher Dennis (Swarthmore, Pa./Swarthmore) and Jimmy Ockford (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) each had a team-high three shots in the loss.
Tom Baker paced the Explorers (3-0) with a goal and an assist. Jason Plumhoff notched a goal in the first half and John McCarthy turned away five shots in the winning effort.
La Salle scored a goal in each half to come away with the victory and even the series at one after the two teams met for the first time last season in Emmitsburg.
Plumhoff got the Explorers on the scoreboard off a cross from Baker when he chipped in a goal from the right side at 9:25 for a 1-0 lead. Baker then sealed the victory when he knocked in the rebound off a Joe Farrell shot at 63:53 for a 2-0 advantage.
Mount St. Mary's had 12 shots in the match, but could not find the back of the net. McCarthy stopped Mountaineer scoring chances by Ockford in the 19th and 33rd minutes, Koudzo Komlan (Lome, Togo/Upper Darby [Pa.]) in the 22nd minute, Dennis in the 29th minute and Patrick Wheeler (Newcastle, Australia/St. Francis Xavier) in the 79th minute. Dennis gave the Mount its final scoring chance, but his shot was blocked with 1:43 remaining in the game.
Last year, Mount St. Mary's defeated La Salle 5-0 in Emmitsburg on Sept. 24, 2011. Dennis tied a single-game program record with four goals in the match.
The Mount returns to action at home against in-state rival UMBC on Friday. Game time is 4 p.m.
