Ockford Heads Men's Soccer Past Quinnipiac On Senior Day In Double Overtime, 2-1
EMMITSBURG, Md. – Jimmy Ockford (Yardley, Pa./Pennsbury) scored with 3:27 left in the second overtime to lift Mount St. Mary's past Quinnipiac 2-1 in Northeast Conference (NEC) men's soccer action on Sunday.
With the game tied at 1, Chris Wheeler (Newcastle, Australia/St. Francis Xavier) tapped the ball back to his brother Patrick Wheeler (Newcastle, Australia/St. Francis Xavier) near the left side line, who then nailed a serve to the right center of the goal and found Ockford's head at the 106:33 mark for the decisive score.
Phillip Suprise scored the Bobcats (5-7-1, 3-3-0 NEC) tally off a Durval Pereira assist and Borja Angoitta turned away five shots in the loss.
Quinnipiac scored quickly before Mount St. Mary's answered to tie the game and went on to win the game in double overtime. The Mount improved to 5-1 at home this season.
The Mountaineers have been the team that usually jumps out to the early lead, but the Bobcats scored one minute and 54 seconds into the contest to grab the early 1-0 advantage thanks to the connection of Pereira to Suprise.
Mount St. Mary's did not wait long to even the score. Hendrie kicked the ball off the Quinnipiac defense and then recovered the ball and with the aid of the right pipe found the back of the net at 7:46.
The game would remain tied until the second overtime period and set up Ockford's heroics.
The Mount outshot Quinnipiac 19-9 in the game, including 13-2 in the first half.
The Bobcats had a 3-2 edge in shots in two overtime periods, but could not convert. William Daniels missed high at 95:17 and Pereira's shot was stopped by Steve at 96:37. Hendrie had a shot late in the first overtime period miss wide at 98:48. Pereira gave Quinnipiac its final scoring chance, but Steve was there for the save at the 101 mark.
Mount St. Mary's will host Saint Francis (Pa.) in the squad's final home game of the season on Friday night. Match time is 7 p.m.
