Iona Upends Men's Soccer In Overtime, 4-3
EASTON, Pa. – Iona scored in the 97th minute to come from behind to defeat Mount St. Mary's 4-3 at the Lafayette Puma Soccer Classic in non-conference men's soccer action on Sunday.
Ian Hendrie (Potomac, Md./St. Andrew's Episcopal School) had a hand in all three Mountaineers' (1-3-1) goals after posting two tallies and an assist. Chris Wheeler (Newcastle, Australia/St. Francis Xavier) notched his second goal of the year while Patrick Wheeler (Newcastle, Australia/St. Francis Xavier) and Zoncher Dennis (Swarthmore, Pa./Strath Haven) each dished out an assist. Peter Steve made a season-high five saves in the loss.
Alvara Torrecilla scored for the second time on the day at 96:44 to give the Gaels (4-0-0) the victory. Frank Castellanos tallied a goal and an assist while Alexander Abdalla added a goal and Samuel Adjei handed out an assist. Borja Barbero turned away two shots in the winning effort.
In a game that featured 13 cards including three red cards, Iona rallied to tie the game with 1:29 left in regulation before scoring in the extra session to claim the victory. Mount St. Mary's played the final 19 minutes and 52 seconds a man down and the last eight minutes and 16 seconds two players down.
Hendrie gave the Mount a 3-2 lead when he found the twine for the second time this afternoon at the 85:05 mark, but Abdalla knotted the game at 3 when he was able to convert a deflected ball off a free kick at 88:31 to send the game into overtime. Adjei then beat a Mount St. Mary's defender and found Torrecilla open for the game-winner at 96:44 for a 4-3 victory.
Iona grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the first half when Castellanos scored at the 32:05 mark.
Trailing 1-0 at the break, the Mountaineers rallied to grab a 2-1 lead in the first three minutes and 40 seconds into the final frame. Chris Wheeler knotted the game 1 off helpers from Hendrie and Dennis at 46:02 before Hendrie handed the Mount a 2-1 edge off a feed from Patrick Wheeler at 48:40.
Castellanos then set up Torrecilla at 57:24 to even the match at 2.
Hendrie then regained the margin for Mount St. Mary's at 85:02, but the Gaels scored twice to come away with the win.
Chris Wheeler now has 35 goals and 77 points in his career.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action at home against Howard on Sept. 19. Match time is 7 p.m. The game against the Bison starts a four-game homestand while five of the next six contests will be at Waldron Family Stadium.
