UMBC Downs Men's Soccer In Season Opener, 1-0
BALTIMORE, Md. – UMBC scored in the 59th minute to down Mount St. Mary's 1-0 in the season opener for both teams in non-conference men's soccer action on Saturday. The game was moved to the afternoon match due to the impending weather from Hurricane Irene.
"We played a very solid game today through some very adverse conditions," said head coach Rob Ryerson, who is in his 12th season at the Mount. "Our freshmen benefited from the experience and it was great for our seniors to show tremendous leadership. We look forward to our next match at Towson on Thursday."
Jordan Becker scored the lone goal of the afternoon at 58:54. The Retrievers (1-0-0) scored on a free kick by Andrew Bulls that was redirected by Pete Caringi, Jr. and found Becker's foot for the decisive score. Dan Louisignau made one save in the winning effort.
Wheeler had seven of the Mountaineers shots in the contest. Wheeler had his shot stopped by the Retriever netminder in the 13th minute for Louisignau's only save of the afternoon while the senior gave Mount St. Mary's its final scoring chance in the 84th minute, but missed wide.
Vlad Finn (Long Beach, N.Y./Long Beach), Mark Plaisance (Montgomery Village, Md./Gaithersburg) and Brett Smoot (Severn, Md./Mount St. Joesph) each made their collegiate debut in the starting lineup while Mauricio Navarrete (Silver Spring, Md./Sherwood), Justin Connor (Dix Hills, N.Y./West Dix Hills) and Daniel Gill (Richmond, Va./Benedictine) saw their first career action off the bench. Alex Graver (Palmerton, Pa./Palmerton) started the match after missing the 2010 season due to an injury.
The Mount returns to action on Thursday at Towson. Game time is 5 p.m.
