EMMITSBURG, Md. - Eric Detzel (York, Pa./Central York), a member of the Mount St. Mary's men's soccer team, has been named the Northeast Conference (NEC) Men's Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year, announced by the league on Thursday. Detzel, who has a 3.87 grade-point average, is double majoring in mathematics and computer science.
All scholar-athlete award winners must have earned a minimum of 60 semester hours, maintained a minimum cumulative grade-point-average of 3.20 and participated with distinction as a member of a varsity team.
Detzel was named the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-America University Division first team and the CoSIDA Capital One District II first team in the fall. He was also named to the All-NEC first team in 2010 after being selected to the All-NEC second team in 2009.
Detzel, a senior midfielder, finished tied for lead in the league in assists (8) and ranked second in assists per game (0.44), seventh in points (14) and 10th in points per game (0.78). Detzel also ranked 19th in the nation in assists and 31st in assists per game.
In the month of October, the senior helped the Mount to four victories after scoring the game-winner against Central Connecticut State on Oct. 1 and dishing out the game-winning assist against Fairleigh Dickinson (Oct. 10), Bryant (Oct. 22) and Robert Morris (Oct. 29). Detzel also helped the Mount to a 4-3 win against George Washington after scoring a goal and tallying two assists in a span of three minutes and five seconds in the first half on Sept. 11.
For his career, Detzel has 17 goals and 17 assists for 51 points. He ranks sixth in program history in assists while also sitting in sixth place on the Mount Division I list for points and seventh in goals.
In addition to Detzel being named the NEC Men's Soccer Scholar-Athlete of the Year, 21 Mount student-athletes were named to the NEC Honor Roll from the men's and women's soccer and men's and women's cross country teams. To be selected to the NEC Honor Roll students must have a 3.20 grade-point average.
Detzel was also one of seven Mount athletes named to the NEC Commissioner's Academic Honor. Joe Perry (men's cross country), Megan Kinsella (women's cross country), Kathryn Franke (women's cross country), Tierney Carabba (women's soccer), Kaylyn Mahon (women's soccer) and Sarah Malpezzi (women's soccer) joined Detzel on the NEC Commissioner's Honor Roll. To be selected to the NEC Commissioner's Roll students must have a 3.75 grade-point average.
