FAIRFIELD, Conn. - Sacred Heart defeated Mount St. Mary's 1-0 in Northeast Conference (NEC) men's soccer action on Sunday.
Chris Davis (Townsville, Australia/Kirwan State) made four saves for the Mount (2-7-0, 1-1-0 NEC) in the loss.
Jesper Frediksson scored the Pioneers' (4-3-1, 1-0-1 NEC) tally while Alex Fait made 10 stops in the winning effort.
Sacred Heart scored in the first half and withstood 25 shots by Mount St. Mary's to hold on for the victory to earn its third-straight win against the Mountaineers.
Fredriksson notched his first goal of the season unassisted at 16:06 for decisive score.
Mount St. Mary's outshot Sacred Heart 25-10 on the afternoon and had several chances to get on the scoreboard, but could not convert. Fait made saves on Eric Mullins (Finksburg, Md./Mount St. Joseph) (second minute), Kyle Patrick (Hershey, Pa./Hershey) (13th minute), Ian Hendrie (Potomac, Md./St. Andrews Episcopal School) (30th minute) and Steve Pathroff (North Ridgeville, Ohio/St. Ignatius) (35th minute) while Will Jagger (Crowsborough, England/Tunbridge Wells Boys Grammar School) hit the crossbar in the fifth minute during the first half.
Mullins (49th minute), Scott Phinith (Gaithersburg, Md./Magruder) (59th minute), Ty Fenstermacher (Macungie, Pa./Emmaus) (65th minute), Hendrie (69th minute) and Pathroff (79th minute) each had their shots turned away by Fait in the second half. The Pioneers defense made a team save on a Hendrie scoring chance in the 65th minute while Davis, the Mount's goalkeeper, gave the Mountaineers its final scoring threat only to see Fait make his 10th save of the match in the 89th minute.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Friday in the squad's NEC home opener against Long Island. The game against the Blackbirds will also be the first-ever men's soccer night game at the Waldron Family Stadium. Game time is 7 p.m.
