Men's Lacrosse Claims Final NEC Playoff Spot with 16-7 Win at Wagner
New York, N.Y. (April 28, 2012)—Mount St. Mary's clinched the fourth and final playoff spot in the Northeast Conference with a 16-7 win at Wagner on Saturday afternoon. Brett Schmidt paced the Mount with three goals and three assists in the win.
Bryant Schmidt and Anthony Golden added three goals each for the Mountaineers (5-8, 2-3 NEC) while Andrew Scalley chipped in a five-point effort (2g, 3a). Bryant Schmidt added an assist for four points on the day with Christian Kellett adding two goals and an assist in the victory.
The Mount scored early and often to take control of the game. Brett Schmidt scored twice while Connor Carey and Kellett added goals as the Mount jumped to a 4-0 lead in the opening five minutes of the game.
Wagner's Mike Hurley scored to stop the run, but Brett Schmidt, Golden and Scalley countered in a three-goal run to give the Mount a commanding 7-1 advantage. Wagner's Nick DePhillips scored with 35 seconds left in the opening quarter to cut the Mount lead to 7-2.
Sam Morrissey scored to open the scoring in the second quarter, but the Mount's Bryant Schmidt, who leads the team with 28 goals this season, scored consecutive markers to give the Mount a 9-3 lead at the half.
Wagner cut the deficit to 9-4 early in the third, but Scalley, Bryant Schmidt and Kellett scored the next three goals to put the Mount on top, 12-4, heading into the fourth quarter.
Golden and Mike Adkins scored back-to-back goals to open the fourth quarter to push the lead to 14-4. The Seahawks (1-13, 1-4 NEC) answered with goals from DePhillips and Morrissey, but Kyle Yates and Golden each scored to put the Mount up, 16-6. William Hedges scored for Wagner to complete the scoring.
The Mountaineers outshot Wagner, 50-24, in the game while holding a 31-13 advantage in ground balls.
The Mount will be the fourth seed at this year's Northeast Conference Tournament and will face top seeded Robert Morris in the semifinals on Friday. Robert Morris clinched the NEC regular season title and the right to host with a 13-12 win over Bryant today.
The Mount won the inaugural NEC title last year, defeating Quinnipiac, 14-9, in the NEC Championship game.
Game Notes: This is the third time this year that twins Brett and Bryant Schmidt have posted hat tricks in the same game…The other two times were against VMI and Michigan…Bryant Schmidt leads the Mount with six hat tricks this year…Scalley and Brett Schmidt are now tied for the team lead with 44 points.
