opening tee... Mount St. Mary's will travel to the Navy Spring Invitational on Saturday and Sunday. The Mount will be competing in the event for the second-straight campaign.
last time on that green... Ray Hyre finished 36th to pace the Mount St. Mary's men's golf team to a 16th-place standing at the Navy Spring Invitational on Apr. 18, 2010. Hyre posted a 78 in the first round and a 77 on the final day to card a two-round score of 155, 13 strokes behind the medalist. Brad Gerick (43rd place, 156), Dan Michalek (54th place, 158), Jeff Kingsbury (93rd place, 170) and Sage Smith (103rd place, 181) rounded out the Mount's five competitors. The Mount finished 16th place after shooting a 319 and a 320 for a two-round score of 639.

opening tee: The Mount St. Mary's men's golf team tunes up for the Northeast Conference Championships by hosting the Mount St. Mary's Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at the Quail Valley Golf Course in Littlestown, Pa. The Mount will be hosting a spring event for the seventh-straight season and for the fifth-consecutive year at Quail Valley. Teams will play a continuous 36 holes on Monday before wrapping up the competition with a final round of 18 on Tuesday.
last time at that event... Ray Hyre finished third to lead the Mount St. Mary's men's golf team to a third-place standing at the Mount St. Mary's Spring Invitational on Apr. 20, 2010. Hyre, who finished second after the first round with a score of 74, posted a 79 in the second round and a 76 in the final round to card a 229 for the tournament, two strokes behind the medalist. Brad Gerick, who was the leader after the first round with a score of 73, finished sixth with a three-round score of 231 while Dan Michalek (10th place, 233), Jake Wetzel (18th place, 236), and Andrew Lawton (30th place, 247) rounded out the Mount's team competitors. Sage Smith (25th place, 242) and Justin Nogay (30th place, 247) participated in the event as individuals.
last time out... Dan Michalek finished fourth to lead the Mount St. Mary's men's golf team to a fourth-place standing at the Penn Quaker Invitational on Apr. 4. Michalek finished the first round tied for the lead with an even round of 71 and then posted a 77 in the final round to card a 148 in the two rounds on the afternoon and finish in fourth place, three strokes behind the medalist. Ray Hyre (22nd place, 153), Kevin Ellison (45th place, 159), Andrew Lawton (50th place, 160) and Tonny Aizpun (58th place, 162) rounded out the Mount's five team competitors. Devin O'Grady competed as an individual and finished 50th place with a score of 160. Mount St. Mary's posted a 298 in the first round to sit two strokes behind the leading Quakers going into the final round and then posted a 313 to finish with a total of 611.
next on tap... After the two events this weekend, the Mount will travel to the Northeast Conference Golf Championships starting on Apr. 29. The three-day invitational will take place at the Mystic Dunes Resort and Golf Club in Celebration, Fla.
spring schedule... Mount St. Mary's will compete in seven events in the spring, including the Northeast Conference Championships (Apr. 29-May 1). The squad will start the spring slate at the Lonnie Barton Invitational (Mar. 7-8) in Savannah, Ga., before heading to the Seminole Intercollegiate hosted by Florida State (Mar. 11-13) in Tallahassee, Fla. The Mount will then compete in the Penn Quaker Classic, a 36-hole one-day tournament in Flourtown, Pa. (Apr. 4) and then will travel to the Navy Spring Invitational (Apr. 16-17) in Annapolis, Md. Mount St. Mary's hosts the Mount St. Mary's Spring Invitational at the Quail Valley Golf Course on Apr. 18-19 and then heads to the Peacock Invitational (Apr. 26) in Neshamic Station, N.J., before heading to Celebration, Fla., for the Northeast Conference Championships.
preseason poll... The Mount St. Mary's men's golf team has been picked to finish eighth in the Northeast Conference (NEC) Championships, according to the NEC Preseason Coaches Poll. Central Connecticut State picked up five first-place votes to be selected as the preseason favorite. Sacred Heart earned two first-place nods to place second in the poll while the defending tournament champions Saint Francis (Pa.) garnered the final two first-place votes to be selected third. Robert Morris, Monmouth, Fairleigh Dickinson, Long Island, the Mount, Wagner and St. Francis (N.Y.) rounded out the 10-team poll.
fall statement... Sage Smith finished second to lead the Mount St. Mary's men's golf team to a second-place standing at the ECAC Championships on Oct. 3. Smith posted a 77 in the first round and then notched a personal-best round of 68 in the final round to finish one stroke over with a 145, five strokes behind the medalist. It was the senior's fifth round of par or better in his career and first since the Rehoboth Beach Invitational on Sept. 28, 2009. Smith is the first Mount golfer to record a score under 70 since former teammate Jeff Kingsbury carded a 69 in the first round of the Northeast Conference Championships on May 2, 2008. The Mountaineers shot a 310 in the first round a season-best 295 in the second round for its 605 total. It was the squad's best finish in an event since winning the Mount St. Mary's Fall Invitational in 2007.
nec statements... In five out of the last six years, the Mount has posted a Top-11 finisher in the NEC Championships. Andrew Hill accomplished the feat in 2004-05, Jordan Bertoglio did it in 2005-06 and Kevin Farrell earned the recognition in 2006-07 and 2007-08. Farrell became the fifth Mount golfer to repeat All-NEC honors. The Mount has had 13 players earn All-NEC recognition in program history and 18 times a player received the nod. In 2009-10, senior Brad Gerick earned All-Tournament honors after finishing in ninth place.
new to the mountain... Freshmen Kevin Ellison (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt), Ryan Lee (Leonia, N.J./Leonia), and Devin O'Grady (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) join the squad for the 2010-2011 season. Tonny Aizpun (Barcelona, Spain/Lycee Francais de Barcelone) joined the team in the spring semester.
about the coach: Kevin Farrell enters his second season as the men's golf coach at Mount St. Mary's. Farrell served as an assistant coach in 2008-2009 and also helped out at the Quail Valley Golf Course. The 2008 graduate at the Mount, earned All-NEC honors in 2007 and 2008 after finishing eighth at the NEC.
