Mount St. Mary's at Lonnie Barton Invitational

opening tee... The Mount St. Mary's men's golf team opens up its spring portion of the schedule at the Lonnie Barton Invitational on Monday and Tuesday. It will be the second time the Mount has competed in the event and the first since the 2008-09 season. Senior Ray Hyre, senior Sage Smith, junior Danny Michalek, freshman Tonny Antonio and freshman Devin O'Grady will be the five competitors for the Mount. Antonio will be making his collegiate debut in the event.
last time out... Dan Michalek and and Andrew Lawton finished fifth to lead the Mount St. Mary's men's golf team to a third-place standing at the Holiday Inn Colonials Classic on Oct. 12. Michalek paced the Mount team players with a 78 in the first round and a 74 in the second round to record a 152 in the two days and finish in fifth place, 11 strokes behind the medalist. Lawton competed as an individual and also placed fifth after registering a 75 in the first round and a 77 in the final round to shoot a 152 in the event. Jake Wetzel also had a good event as an individual, finishing one stroke behind Michalek and Lawton in eighth place after carding a 153. Kevin Ellison (17th place, 160), Devin O'Grady (18th place, 161), Ray Hyre (26th place, 165) and Sage Smith (29th place, 166) rounded out the Mountaineers team players. Freshman Ryan Lee joined Lawton and Wetzel as individuals in the event, finishing 34th with a score of 171 in his collegiate debut.
last time at that event... Sage Smith finished in 19th place to lead the Mount St. Mary's men's golf team to a 10th-place standing at the Lonnie Barton Invitational on Mar. 10, 2009. Smith posted an 83 in the first round and then recorded a team-best 77 in the second round for a two-round total of 160 to place 19th, 17 strokes behind the medalist. Brandon Powers (43rd place, 173), Steve Crain (45th place, 173), Jeff Kingsbury (47th place, 179) and Jake Wetzel (49th place, 183) rounded out the Mountaineers' competitors.
next on tap...The Mount returns to the green at the Seminole Intercollegiate in Tallahassee, Fla., starting on Friday.
freshman comes far to start collegiate career... Freshman Tonny Antonio will be making his collegiate debut at the Lonnie Barton Invitational on Monday. Antonio, who hails from Barcelona, Spain, joined the team for the spring semester.
spring schedule... Mount St. Mary's will compete in seven events in the spring, including the Northeast Conference Championships (Apr. 29-May 1). The squad will start the spring slate at the Lonnie Barton Invitational (Mar. 7-8) in Savannah, Ga., before heading to the Seminole Intercollegiate hosted by Florida State (Mar. 11-13) in Tallahassee, Fla. The Mount will then compete in the Penn Quaker Classic, a 36-hole one-day tournament in Flourtown, Pa. (Apr. 4) and then will travel to the Navy Spring Invitational (Apr. 16-17) in Annapolis, Md. Mount St. Mary's hosts the Mount St. Mary's Spring Invitational at the Quail Valley Golf Course on Apr. 18-19 and then heads to the Peacock Invitational (Apr. 26) in Neshamic Station, N.J., before heading to Celebration, Fla., for the Northeast Conference Championships.
preseason poll... The Mount St. Mary's men's golf team has been picked to finish eighth in the Northeast Conference (NEC) Championships, according to the NEC Preseason Coaches Poll. Central Connecticut State picked up five first-place votes to be selected as the preseason favorite. Sacred Heart earned two first-place nods to place second in the poll while the defending tournament champions Saint Francis (Pa.) garnered the final two first-place votes to be selected third. Robert Morris, Monmouth, Fairleigh Dickinson, Long Island, the Mount, Wagner and St. Francis (N.Y.) rounded out the 10-team poll.
fall statement... Sage Smith finished second to lead the Mount St. Mary's men's golf team to a second-place standing at the ECAC Championships on Oct. 3. Smith posted a 77 in the first round and then notched a personal-best round of 68 in the final round to finish one stroke over with a 145, five strokes behind the medalist. It was the senior's fifth round of par or better in his career and first since the Rehoboth Beach Invitational on Sept. 28, 2009. Smith is the first Mount golfer to record a score under 70 since former teammate Jeff Kingsbury carded a 69 in the first round of the Northeast Conference Championships on May 2, 2008. The Mountaineers shot a 310 in the first round a season-best 295 in the second round for its 605 total. It was the squad's best finish in an event since winning the Mount St. Mary's Fall Invitational in 2007.
nec statements... In five out of the last six years, the Mount has posted a Top-11 finisher in the NEC Championships. Andrew Hill accomplished the feat in 2004-05, Jordan Bertoglio did it in 2005-06 and Kevin Farrell earned the recognition in 2006-07 and 2007-08. Farrell became the fifth Mount golfer to repeat All-NEC honors. The Mount has had 13 players earn All-NEC recognition in program history and 18 times a player received the nod. In 2009-10, senior Brad Gerick earned All-Tournament honors after finishing in ninth place.
new to the mountain... Freshmen Kevin Ellison (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt), Ryan Lee (Leonia, N.J./Leonia), and Devin O'Grady (Lancaster, Pa./Manheim Township) join the squad for the 2010-2011 season.
about the coach: Kevin Farrell enters his second season as the men's golf coach at Mount St. Mary's. Farrell served as an assistant coach in 2008-2009 and also helped out at the Quail Valley Golf Course. The 2008 graduate at the Mount, earned All-NEC honors in 2007 and 2008 after finishing eighth at the NEC.
