EMMITSBURG, Md. - The Mount St. Mary's men's golf team has been picked to finish eighth in the Northeast Conference (NEC) Championships, according to the NEC Preseason Coaches Poll announced on Thursday.
Central Connecticut State picked up five first-place votes to be selected as the preseason favorite. Sacred Heart earned two first-place nods to place second in the poll while the defending tournament champions Saint Francis (Pa.) garnered the final two first-place votes to be selected third. Robert Morris, Monmouth, Fairleigh Dickinson, Long Island, the Mount, Wagner and St. Francis (N.Y.) rounded out the 10-team poll.
Junior Danny Michalek (Mount Airy, Md./Georgetown Prep) leads the team with a 76.5 strokes per round average after the fall season. The junior finished fifth at the Holiday Inn Colonial Classic on Oct. 12. Senior Sage Smith (Denver, Colo./Brophy) ranked second on the team with a 77.4 strokes per round average in the fall. Smith finished second at the ECAC Championships on Oct. 1 after posting his first collegiate under par round with a 68 in the first round.
As a team, the squad's best performance was also at the ECAC Championships. The squad finished second in the two-day event after posting a 310 in the first round and a season-low 295 in the final round.
Mount St. Mary's opens the spring portion of their schedule at the Lonnie Barton Invitational on Mar. 7.
