Hyre Named Northeast Conference Co-Men's Golfer Of The Week
EMMITSBURG, Md. - Ray Hyre (Bowie, Md./Bowie), a member of the Mount St. Mary's men's golf team, has been named the Northeast Conference Co-Men's Golfer of the Week for the week of Apr. 20-26. It is the senior's first conference honor.
Hyre finished second at the Peacock Invitational on Tuesday after shooting a three-over round of 75 to finish two strokes behind the medalist. Hyre shares the league honor with Ian Thimble from Monmouth, who also carded a 75 at the event hosted by Saint Peter's. Mount St. Mary's finished fifth as a team in the event.
Hyre boasts a 79.4 strokes per round average this season and a 79.1 strokes per round average for his career. The second-place standing at the Peacock Invitational was his first Top-5 finish this season and third of his career. Hyre has also notched five Top-10 places in his career.
Hyre becomes the first Mount golfer to earn NEC Golfer of the Week honors since Jake Wetzel (Blue Ridge Summit, Pa./Waynesboro Area) for the week of Oct. 17-23, 2007. It marks the seventh time since 2000 the Mount has had a player earn the top weekly honor. Along with Hyre and Wetzel, Justin Sick earned the honor twice in the 2006-07 season, including sharing the honor with current head coach Kevin Farrell in the fall of that campaign. Colby Jacobs and Andrew Hill each earned the award once during the 2003-04 season and Josh Leibfried picked up the nod twice in the 2000-01 season.
Mount St. Mary's returns to action on Friday in the first round of the Northeast Conference Men's Golf Championships. The three day event will take place at the Mystic Dunes Resort and Golf Club in Celebration, Fla.
