Fairfield, Conn. (February 17, 2018)—Junior Robinson scored a game-high 30 points, including a pair of free throws with 2.7 seconds left to seal the victory, as Mount St. Mary's held off Sacred Heart, 74-69, on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Mount improves to 16-13 overall and 10-6 in the Northeast Conference.
Sacred Heart (9-20, 4-12 NEC) took its only lead of the second half on a Sean Hoehn three-pointer, but the Mount answered with the next 10 point to grab a 52-44 advantage. Chris Wray scored in the paint to start the surge, and Greg Alexander followed with a pair of three-pointers. A Robinson basket capped the run to put the Mount ahead by eight.
The Pioneers whittled the Mount advantage down to 59-56 after a Kinnon LaRose lay-up, but the Mount's Donald Carey answered with a traditional three-point play for a 62-56 lead with 4:02 remaining. Leading 64-60, Jonah Antonio hit a clutch three-pointer to stretch the lead to seven with just under two minutes remaining.
Robinson hit a pair of free throws to make it 69-61 with 1:35 left, but Sacred Heart was able to cut the gap to 72-69 after a Hoehn drive with 8.0 seconds left. The Mount was able to get the ball to Robinson on the inbounds pass, and he was fouled with 2.7 seconds on the clock. Robinson sank both free throws to seal the win.
Robinson led the Mount with 30 points in the victory, hits fifth 30-point game of the season. Robinson's 30-point effort gives him 1,824 career points at the Mount. Freshmen Carey and Antonio each had 11 points in the win while Chris Wray chipped in seven points, 13 rebounds, seven assists and three steals in a solid all-around game.
LaRose led Sacred Heart with a double-double of 21 points and 10 rebounds while Mario Matasovic added a double-double of his own with 16 points and 11 boards. Hoehn added 16 points with Joseph Lopez finishing with 10 points and nine rebounds in the game.
The Mount shot 48.0 percent in the game and was 9-of-23 (.391) from three-point range. Sacred Heart shot 35.4 percent and were 7-of-27 (.259) from beyond the arc. The Pioneers held a 48-to-26 advantage on the boards, but the Mount scored 28 points off 18 Sacred Heart turnovers in the game.
Trailing 13-9 in the first half, the Mountaineers went on a 10-0 run to take the lead. Carey started the run with a bucket, and Antonio's three-pointer from the left corner put the Mount ahead, 14-13. Wray scored in the paint, and Robinson hit a three-pointer to cap the spurt.
The Mount stretched the lead to 28-17 on a Carey traditional three-point play, but the Pioneers responded with the next six points to cut the Mount advantage to five. Alexander hit a three-pointer on the next possession to start an 8-0 run that gave the Mount its biggest lead of the half, 36-23. Sacred Heart closed the half on a 7-1 run to make it 37-30 at the break.
Robinson led the Mount with 15 points in the first half while Carey added seven points. The Mount shot 51.9 percent (14-of-27) overall and were 5-of-10 (.500) from three-point range. Sacred Heart shot 9-of-31 (.290) from the floor, but held a 25-to-13 edge on the boards to stay in the game.
The Mount returns to action on Thursday, February 22, with a 7:00 p.m. home game with Robert Morris. Tip-off is set for 7:00 p.m. and the game will air live on the CBS Sports Network.
