New Britain, Conn. (February 8, 2018)—Junior Robinson poured in 32 points to lead Mount St. Mary's past Central Connecticut, 71-57, on Thursday night at Detrick Gymnasium. The Mount has won five in a row to move to 15-11 on the season and 9-4 in the Northeast Conference.
Trailing 34-27 early in the second half, the Mount went on an 18-to-5 run to take the lead. A Robinson three-pointer put the Mount ahead, 37-36, and Donald Carey scored the final seven points of the surge, the last basket on a three-pointer for a 44-39 lead.
Central Connecticut (12-14, 5-8 NEC) scored the next four points, but Carey answered with a four-ponit play to put the Mount up 48-43. At that point, Robinson took over to help push the lead to double figures. Robinson sandwiched tough drives to the basket around a Tyler Kohl three-pointer to put the Mount up 52-46. He then made a sensational block of CCSU's Mustafa Jones at the rim, and then connected on a three-pointer for a 55-46 lead. He then dished out an assist on a Greg Alexander triple that extended the lead to 58-46. The Mountaineers led by double figures the rest of the way.
Robinson hit 12-of-17 from the field and 4-of-6 from three-point range in the game while adding a team-high five assists. His 32-point effort moves him into a tie with Kevin Booth for seventh on the Mount's all-time scoring list with 1,741 career points. It was Robinson's third 30-point game of the season.
Carey finished with 13 points and four rebounds with Alexander chipping in 10 points and four boards off the bench. Chris Wray added eight points, eight rebounds, three assists, four blocks and three steals in another solid all-around game.
Kohl led Central Connecticut with 24 points and nine rebounds with Joe Hugley adding 16 points. The Mount shot 51.9 percent overall and was 9-of-25 (.360) from three-point range. Central Connecticut shot 37.3 percent overall, including 8-of-27 (.296) in the second half.
The Mount jumped out to an early 5-0 lead on a Wray dunk in transition on a feed from Robinson and a Bobby Planutis three-pointer. Kohl scored five in a row for the Blue Devils, but the Mount countered with the next six points, the final four from Robinson, to grab an 11-5 advantage.
CCSU fought back with a 15-to-5 run to take a 20-16 lead. The Blue Devils hit three three-pointers in the run, including a pair from Hugley. Central Connecticut extended the lead to 26-18 on a Deion Bute basket in the paint. The Mount cut the deficit to 26-23, but Hugley's third three-pointer of the half pushed the CCSU lead to 29-23. Robinson scored the final basket of the half on a drive to make it 32-27 at the break.
Robinson led all scorers with 14 points in the first half, hitting 6-of-10 from the floor. Wray added four blocks in the opening 20 minutes. Kohl led Central Connecticut with 11 points and six boards in the opening half while Hugley added 10.
CCSU was 11-of-24 (.458) from the field in the first half, including 6-of-12 (.500) from three-point range. The Mountaineers shot 12-of-25 (.480) from the floor, but were 3-of-10 (.300) from beyond the arc.
The Mountaineers are back in action at Bryant on Saturday, February 10, with a 1:00 p.m. tip-off.
