Milwaukee, Wis. (November 10, 2017)—Mount St. Mary's opened the 2017-18 men's basketball season with an 80-59 loss at Marquette on Friday night. Senior guard Junior Robinson paced the Mount with 20 points and six assists.
Robinson's 20-point effort was 13th 20-point game of his career. Freshman Donald Carey chipped in 11 points and three assists while Greg Alexander had nine points and four rebounds off the bench. Redshirt freshman Jonah Antonio had eight points, five rebounds and three steals in his Mount debut.
Andrew Rowsey led Marquette with 23 points and five assists while Haanif Cheatham and Sacar Anim each had 13 points in the loss.
Marquette opened the game with an 8-0 run before Greg Alexander hit a three-pointer to get the Mount on the scoreboard. A Robinson putback cut the deficit to 13-7, but Marquette stretched the lead to 26-14 midway through the half.
The Mount, behind three-pointers from Carey and Antonio, cut the deficit to 26-20 with 8:46 remaining. The Golden Eagles, however, responded by closing the half on a 22-to-7 run for a 21-point lead at the half.
Robinson led the Mount (0-1) with eight points and four assists in the opening half with Antonio adding six points. The Mountaineers were 9-of-22 (.409) from the floor, but had 12 turnovers in the half. Marquette (1-0) shot 59.3 percent (16-of-27) while committing just four first-half turnovers.
Mount St. Mary's is back in action on Monday, November 13, with a 7:00 p.m. matchup at Notre Dame. This will be the third all-time meeting between the Mount and the Fighting Irish.
